It’s with great excitement that I share these photos of the Stage One improvements to Weir Park! 🌳

With works nearing completion, the results really do speak for themselves. A huge congratulations to everyone involved, especially our Shire Crew, who have worked tirelessly to bring this to life, and to our Manager of Infrastructure & Assets, Rick Miller, for his leadership throughout.

I can’t wait to see our community enjoying this space. Please do so and tag this page so we can share.

Ever wondered who trains the trainer? This morning Sally House of Sally House gave Geena Batchelor of Active Farmers - Gnowangerup Active Farmers Borden WA a taste of her own medicine. Geena has spent years making us all groan, and today it was her turn. Karma has never looked so core-strengthening. 😂

Some stars shine brighter than others — and this morning, Shire of Gnowangerup LG rising star Robbie miniter had the chance to attend the Icons Breakfast, hearing from four-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Ariarne Titmus OAM, alongside coach Dean Boxall.

Ariarne made history in Paris with back-to-back Olympic golds in the 400m freestyle. Dean’s leadership has helped drive some of Australia’s greatest swimming achievements, and his passion for the sport captured the world’s attention during the Tokyo Games. Together, they kept the room captivated with insights into what it takes to reach the top.

Thank you to Basil Zempilas for demonstrating a clear understanding of the challenges facing Local Governments funding GP services out of their rateable income, in his keynote address this morning at the LG Convention. It’s encouraging — and frankly overdue — to hear this acknowledged by the Leader of the Opposition.

Our hope is that the current government and Health Minister Meredith Hammat will finally recognise this challenge and act. To date, LGs like Shire of Gnowangerup have been left to carry a financial burden that isn’t ours to bear, while calls for reform have gone largely unanswered.

However, we know real change won’t come without sustained pressure from us, and we’ll keep pushing until rural communities get the funding certainty they deserve.

Great to meet today with DFES Deputy Commissioner Melissa Pexton to discuss equipment and funding for our bush fire brigades, fire management priorities, and the significant responsibilities carried by our CEO and Chief Bush Fire Control Officer.

With 20 years’ experience in emergency management at a national, state and local level, Melissa brings real depth of understanding to these conversations. It was heartening to see her genuine grasp of the challenges facing our region. Thank you for taking the time to listen, Melissa — I look forward to continuing to work together to support our volunteers and community. 🚒

One of the real highlights of the LG Convention is carving out time with fellow Great Southern women in local government leadership to talk through the issues and projects our shires are all wrestling with.

Lovely to catch up with Rebecca Stephens (City of Albany), Kate Johnston (Shire of Kent), and Kristy D’Aprile (Shire of Katanning) — always valuable comparing notes with people who get exactly what regional local government is up against.

Also great to spend time with Caroline Robinson of 150 Square, who continues to champion local government advocacy on the issues that matter most to our communities.

Conversations like these are exactly why regional collaboration matters — we’re stronger when we tackle shared challenges together. 🌾

Today, our Councillors commenced a two-day professional development course, presented by none other than Mark Chester — who served as CEO here back in the early 90s. It’s been lovely to see Mark back in town, especially as he was the one who originally employed Robbie as Works Manager — the two of them had a wonderful catch-up, as did we all. Cr Callaghan was an elected member on council when Mark was CEO. Mark’s incredible wealth of knowledge and experience made day one of this course thoroughly interesting and engaging.

Today I had the privilege of watching Cr Miniter showcase the Noongar Centre and Museum to golfing visitors spending a few days in our shire. Robbie’s stories, his passion for sharing traditional history, and his promotion of the fantastic work being done through the Ranger Program and GAC filled me with pride and optimism for our shire’s future.
