🐥Duckling to Tadpole 🐳 Our parent/child class journey...
🚫NO FLOATIES🚫
At Jump we believe it is important for children to learn about their own buoyancy in water - if they were to accidentally fall in, they need to feel comfortable enough not to panic, they need to know that will sink, and they need to turn back towards where they fell. This is the reason we do not use attached flotation aids.
Part of the process is practiced in each level of the parent/child program using an activity we call "Dolphins". The parent walks backwards creating a slipstream of water for the child. Half way across parents use the cue "name, ready, go!", slightly lift the child then lower, assisting them to glide towards the parent, submerging to their chin/mouth/nose/eyes dependent on level of readiness.
The activity is extended, when the child is ready, to the parent letting go of the child for up to 5 seconds after submerging.
This gentle, child-centred approach means there are no tears anywhere to be seen and leads to a "safer" experience - knowing that there may be a time when they "escape" from parental supervision.
