Increasing Mandarin exposure to your child.

Many children learning Mandarin only have the language exposure during our classes. It is great to expose them at least three times weekly, better still everyday. You might think it is challenging to do that. However listening to our audio files and watching animation is a fun way to do that. For some, here is a clip that will re-enforce what they have been learning in our classes and for others, it is a great way to introduce the topic.

Chinese celebrate Winter Solstice today 21st Dec 2025.
It is called Dōngzhì, 冬至. Some consider this more important than Lunar New Year. It symbolises hope for better days especially after the shortest day in winter in northern hemisphere. It is a great time for family reunion with eating tangyuan (汤圆) together. These are sweet glutinous rice balls which symbolizes completeness and reunion.

It has been raining here in Melbourne for the past week however with a few good days in between!

I hope you have had many more better days:)

The Chinese 4-word Idioms are such great way to express a situation, feelings or other things.

Talking about raining days, here is one for you

雨过天青 (yǔ guò tiān qīng)
literally translated to 'rain passes day clears'

It is a good encouragement that better future will follow after hard times.

We have not forgotten our friendly snake and its idiom 😉

画 蛇 添 足
huà shé tiān zú

Draw snake with legs

Implication: Over doing something only brings detrimental results.

Dragon Boat Festival was on 31st May. It falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese calendar.
This is celebrated by Chinese across the globe to commemorate a well loved minister Qu Yuan of the Chu state of Zhou Dynasty. Qu Yuan lived during the Warring States Period from 475 to 221 BC. Out of despair during his exile because of his opposition to the ruler's alliance with Qin and eventually he was accused of treason, he drown himself in the river.

It is believed that the locals raised out in their boats to save him but unfortunately in vain. They dropped sticky rice balls hoping that the fishes would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body.

For centuries the Chinese would hold Dragon Boat Race and eat Zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves) to commemorate Qu Yuan.
