After the beautiful new house is built and the builders have left a bleak, lunar landscape behind in their wake. The question is always the same, how do we start from a blank canvas?

Every Open Garden Day, we love showcasing a garden that's only a year or two old, and this year’s feature is "Nonna’s Kitchen Garden." Starting from scratch just a couple of years ago, Linda and Phil have transformed a clean slate into a thriving haven filled with family history.

Out front, native plantings blend effortlessly into the streetscape alongside young grapevines — a tribute to their new home in w**e country. In the back, housewarming gifts and heirloom cuttings from family gardens have taken root. Today, fruit trees, a productive vegie, herb and flower garden flourishes at the heart of it all, filling their Italian kitchen with fresh, home-grown ingredients.

Come along on Open Garden Day to see how a blank canvas can bloom into something truly special!

Only 28 days until our Open Garden Day and we're getting excited. Each week we’ll give you a little sneak peak of what to expect.

This year we’re featuring one of the oldest gardens in Heathcote — over a hundred years old — now being lovingly restored by the granddaughter of the original owner and her husband. Together they’re working tirelessly to bring both the house and garden back to life through a thoughtful blend of renovation and restoration.

The result is one of the brightest and quirkiest gardens you’ll ever encounter. A visit here will reveal the whimsical Chandelier Tree and sculptures that look as though they’ve wandered straight out of the pages of Alice in Wonderland, and countless creative surprises to spark the imagination.

To all our incredible volunteers, families, and every wonderful father figure across our community — Happy Father’s Day! 💙

Today we celebrate not just dads, but grandads, uncles, mentors, step-dads, and those who step up with love and care whenever they’re needed. You’re the steady shoulders, the quiet strength, and the heart behind so many homes and lives.

To our dedicated SES team — many of you balance family life with being there for our community, day and night, through storms and calm. Your commitment, kindness, and courage inspire us all. You give so much to look after others, and today we hope you feel deeply cherished in return.

May your day be filled with warmth, laughter, and time with the people who matter most. Thank you for everything you are, and everything you do.

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Heathcote SES 💙

Victorians are being encouraged to take simple steps to prepare their property and get storm ready ahead of forecast strong winds and severe weather across large parts of the state this weekend.

Preparedness is always the best defence against storms and by trimming back overhanging branches, parking vehicles undercover and away from trees and tying down loose outdoor items such as trampolines, umbrellas and furniture, community members can significantly reduce their storm risk this weekend and throughout the upcoming high risk weather season.

Communities are also encouraged to avoid travelling in heavily treed areas during periods of strong wind and to safely pull over away from trees, drains and low-lying areas if conditions are dangerous.

If you require SES emergency assistance, call 132 500.
