While most of the Shire was settling in for a cold winter night, NSW SES volunteers were heading into the water. 🦺🌊

Members from our Menai Unit joined volunteers from across the Sutherland Shire Cluster at Bonnie Vale in the Royal National Park for flood rescue training.

Using the natural rapids and challenging conditions, crews practised vital flood rescue skills, ensuring they’re ready to respond safely and effectively when the community needs them most.

Training like this helps maintain the high level of capability required for flood rescue operations and reinforces the teamwork that is so important during emergencies.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who gave up their evening to sharpen their skills in some very chilly conditions. 👏

Late yesterday afternoon and into the evening, NSW SES Sutherland Shire Units, together with supporting out-of-area units, assisted the NSW Police Force in the search for a missing person in the Royal National Park.

We are pleased to report that the missing person was located safe and well.

We thank all agencies and volunteers involved for their dedication and teamwork in achieving this positive outcome.

Over the past four days NSW SES Sutherland Shire Units (Cronulla, Heathcote, Menai & Sutherland) and many other NSW SES units across Sydney and Wollongong areas have partnered with other agencies, including NSW Rural Fire Service Waterfall Brigade and NSW Ambulance, in supporting NSW Police Force in searching for a missing person in the Royal National Park.

Today, the missing person was found safely.

We are grateful for the public’s interest and support.

🌧️ FLASH FLOODING RESPONSE – SUTHERLAND SHIRE SES

Last night was a significant operational period for the NSW SES across Greater Sydney.

Across the metropolitan area, volunteers responded to more than 400 incidents and conducted 40+ flood rescues following intense rainfall that impacted the region.

Several flood rescue teams from the Sutherland Shire were activated, with our members deploying to assist with flood rescues at:
• Audley Weir
• Fairfield
• Liverpool

We are incredibly proud of the professionalism and dedication shown by our volunteers, who worked through challenging conditions to keep the community safe.

We are also grateful for the support of partner agencies including NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and local RFS volunteers who supported at many of these incidents.

🚗 A reminder to the community: If it’s flooded, forget it.

• Avoid non-essential travel during heavy rainfall
• Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater
• Follow warnings and advice from emergency services

⚠️ Detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL

ℹ️ The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:15 pm, severe thunderstorms likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were detected near Camden, Oran Park and the Gresford district.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect Campbelltown, Springwood and Blaxland by 4:45 pm and Sutherland, Liverpool and Penrith by 5:15 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

✅ Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
✅ Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
✅ If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
✅ Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
