BEFORE & AFTER: Hydrant Inspections

Our crew have been conducting hydrant inspections to ensure firefighters have quick and reliable access to water in the event of a fire.

We encourage all residents to take the time to look outside their property. If there's a hydrant nearby, help keep it clear of overgrown vegetation, parked vehicles and other obstructions.

✅ Trim vegetation around hydrants
✅ Avoid parking in front of hydrants
✅ Report damaged or blocked hydrants

If maintenance or marking is required, report it to your local fire station, council or water authority fire.nsw.gov.au/fire-safety/home-fire-safety/topics/hydrants/reporting-hydrants

Your actions could save critical minutes in an emergency. Do your part to help keep firefighters ready and our community safe.

JOIN YOUR LOCAL CFU: Help protect your community

We’re looking for local residents in close proximity to Rajani Road and Excelsa Avenue to join CFU MHP-170 as it currently has no active members.

A Community Fire Unit (CFU) is a team of local residents living in urban areas close to bushland who are supported by Fire and Rescue NSW to enhance their safety and resilience to bushfires.

As a volunteer Fire and Rescue NSW - Community Fire Units member you will learn how to prepare yourself, your family and your home ahead of the bushfire season. You will learn how to make informed decisions about whether to leave early or stay and defend your property when bushfires threaten.

INCIDENT UPDATE: Tree Down on Power Lines

At 2.55pm on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, firefighters responded to a large tree that had fallen across power lines, causing power outages to several neighbouring properties on Southview Avenue, Stanwell Tops.

Firefighters established a safety zone, assisted residents, and remained on scene until energy services arrived to isolate the power.

The incident was then handed over to Endeavour Energy, who used a crane and specialist crews to remove the tree and make the area safe.

A great reminder to stay well clear of fallen power lines and always treat them as live.

INCIDENT UPDATE: Beach Fire

At 2.31pm on Sunday, 20 September 2026, firefighters responded to a fire on Stanwell Park Beach involving a group of young people using an open fire/BBQ.

The group was advised that lighting a fire in a public place is not permitted and was directed to extinguish the fire. While one individual questioned the direction, firefighters reiterated the fire safety requirements and the fire was subsequently extinguished.

A reminder to all that fires are not permitted on Wollongong City beaches. Wollongong City Council's beach rules clearly state "No fires allowed", and fines of more than $100 may apply for those who do not comply.

Help keep our beaches safe for everyone:

• Do not light fires or BBQs on the sand
• Follow all local council regulations
• Dispose of rubbish responsibly
• Report unsafe behaviour if required

Thank you for doing your part to protect our community and our environment.

INCIDENT UPDATE: Yard Fires

Over the past week, firefighters have responded to multiple yard fires throughout the Helensburgh area, with crews often returning to the same address to provide further fire safety advice.

We are therefore reminding all residents to dispose of unwanted materials responsibly.

Please also be aware that fire permits may be required depending on the activity and local regulations. For more info visit fire.nsw.gov.au/incidents/fire-permits

If enjoying a recreational yard fire, please ensure that:

✅ The fire is well contained
✅ A suitable water source is close by
✅ The fire is constantly supervised by an adult
✅ The fire is never left unattended
✅ The fire is fully extinguished when no longer in use

By following these simple safety measures, we can help reduce the risk of preventable fires and keep our community safe.
