Give fire a break! 🔥
Grassfires can travel incredibly quickly when they get a run through dry grass and vegetation.
For rural properties, 20 metres is a good starting point when considering fuel reduction around your home and critical farm infrastructure. The important part is not just creating a break. It’s keeping it maintained throughout the fire season.
Mow, slash, graze or plow grass and other vegetation around your home, sheds, machinery, livestock areas and other critical infrastructure. Keep grass, fallen timber and other fuels clear from the things your livelihood depends on. 🌾🚜
But preparing your property isn’t just about reducing fuel.
🚒 Make sure emergency services can get in.
• Keep your driveway, property access and farm gates clear, with enough room for a fire truck to enter safely.
• Make sure there is enough space for emergency vehicles to turn around near your home, sheds and other critical buildings.
• Keep access to critical water supplies, including tanks, dams and other water points, clear and accessible for emergency services.
A firebreak doesn’t guarantee a fire will stop. Under severe conditions, fire and embers can cross breaks, but reducing available fuel around your property can help reduce fire intensity and the risk to your home, infrastructure and livelihood.
Don’t wait for the first hot day. Get your property ready now and keep on top of it throughout the fire season.
🔥 Reduce the fuel. Clear the access. Protect what matters.
