Kidsafe, in partnership with the Australian & New Zealand Burn Association (ANZBA), has launched National Burns Awareness Month (June) to raise awareness about burn prevention and the importance of proper first aid.
Burns can happen in a matter of seconds, but providing immediate and appropriate first aid can help minimise the extent of the injury and support a better recovery. If a burn occurs, cool the affected area under running water for 20 minutes and contact 000 if emergency assistance is required.

After experiencing a terrifying near-miss with her newborn daughter, South Australian mum and Channel 7 personality, Elspeth Hussey, is sharing her story to help raise awareness for other parents and carers about how quickly everyday situations can turn dangerous.
While out shopping with her two-week-old daughter, Elspeth briefly turned away from the pram to look at one last item. In that moment, the pram rolled out the shop door and towards the road. Thankfully, a quick-thinking shop assistant managed to stop it at the kerb before tragedy struck.
Elspeth says the experience was a confronting reminder that near-misses can happen to anyone — even attentive, experienced parents and carers. Exhaustion, distractions and everyday moments can quickly lead to dangerous situations.
Her message to other parents: always apply the pram brake, use the wrist strap, and be mindful of slopes, doorways and busy areas — even if you’re only stepping away for a second.
Sometimes, a few seconds is all it takes.

Once a child is too tall for their rear-facing child restraint (as indicated by the shoulder height markers), they should use a forward-facing child restraint with an inbuilt harness as long as they still fit in it.
Don’t be in a hurry to move little ones into the next stage of child car restraint. No two children are the same - there is no magic number. Keep each child in their current seat until they outgrow it.
For free advice or to book an appointment to have a car seat fitted/hired give us a call on (08) 7089 8554 or pop in and visit us at 92 Sir Donald Bradman Drive in Hilton.
