Fermentation: A Taste of the Season

Discover the magic of fermentation, seasonal flavours and the art of making good food go further.

What if you could capture the best of the season, transform everyday ingredients and create food bursting with flavour? From tangy, crunchy vegetables to deeply savoury umami flavours and naturally fermented drinks, fermentation opens up a whole new world of possibilities in the kitchen.

Join visiting fermentation educator Jane Jenkinson for a special evening in Hindmarsh Valley, exploring the traditions, techniques and delicious possibilities of fermented food.

Jane is the founder of Wholefood Family, a Newcastle based fermentation business known for its vibrant Beetroot Kvass, stocked locally at Raw Bulk Wholefoods and distributed across Australia. With more than 16 years of fermentation teaching experience, Jane has helped people discover the pleasure of fermenting, understand the processes behind it and gain the confidence to bring these age-old traditions into their own kitchens.

This two hour demonstration is all about the foundations of fermentation, with live demonstrations, tastings and seasonal recipe inspiration. Discover how simple ingredients change and develop over time, how fermentation builds layers of flavour, and how to make the most of seasonal produce while preserving a little of its goodness for later.

Expect fascinating food transformations, delicious flavours, practical tips and plenty of inspiration to take home. There'll be a little history, a little food science and lots to discover about the wonderful things that happen when we give food time to transform.

Whether you're growing your own vegetables, looking for new ways to use your garden harvest, cooking for a family, exploring food with your homeschoolers or simply passionate about good food, there's something here for you.

Well, here's a special opportunity we haven't offered before!

We are thrilled to announce that nationally recognised mosaic artist Ange Biermann is coming to Hindmarsh Valley! Ange’s popular workshops usually sell out long in advance, but on Wednesday 18 November, she will be hosting an exclusive one-day workshop at the Old School Hall.

Whether you are an absolute beginner wanting to try something new, or an experienced artist looking to hone your skills under expert guidance, you will be warmly welcomed.

Under Ange's tuition, you'll craft your very own handmade mosaic Christmas wreath or decoration—something special as a gift or to bring festive joy and pride to your home for years to come.

Workshop Details:
📍 Where: The Old School Hall, Hindmarsh Tiers Road

📅 When: Wednesday 18 November | 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

🎟️ Cost: $135 (Includes all materials, tools, a light lunch, a glass of w**e or soft drink, tea/coffee, and entry into our door prize!)

🔗 Bookings: hvpa.link/mosaic

Places are strictly limited to ensure a relaxed, hands-on experience, so we encourage booking early to avoid missing out.

Bonus: After the workshop wraps up, feel free to pop across the road to the main hall and enjoy a stroll through our growing community night market!

We look forward to seeing you there for a wonderful day of creativity and connection.

The HVPA AGM will be held at the Old school hall in Hindmarsh Tiers Road on Tuesday 6th October at 7pm.
We've had a year of ups and downs but, we're pleased to say that the ups have outnumbered the downs and the future of the halls is looking a lot healthier than it was when we launched the appeal a little over 18 months ago.
We still need volunteers to help and there will be committee places to fill over the next 12 months - so if you are interested or just want to hear what's going on with halls, we'd love to see you.

Well, that was a bit of a day...
Thankfully, unlike the catastrophic flooding of 2022, this time the halls were not damaged. The bridge over the normally very shallow creek wasn't so lucky.
Lots of cleanup and a some repairs to do but nothing to interfere with upcoming events

We are thrilled to announce a fantastic new local partnership! 🥂

We have joined forces with the wonderful team at George's Folly Wines, based just down the road in Currency Creek, as our official w**e partner for upcoming events at our community halls.

As w**e enthusiasts ourselves, we couldn't be happier. George's Folly crafts outstanding w**es, ranging from crowd-pleasing classics to a few unique and exciting varietals. Their crisp Roussanne will be serving as our ‘house white’, while our go-to red will be their rich, smooth Shiraz.

From time to time, we will also feature a few special additions, including their Montepulciano, a stunning Nero d’Avola, a couple of refreshing rosés, and even a Gamay that brings back fond memories of sipping chilled Beaujolais on sunny afternoons in France.

Come along and celebrate with us this weekend at the Hindmarsh Valley Art Show! 🖼️✨

📍 Where: Hindmarsh Valley Hall, Hindmarsh Tiers Road
⏰ When: Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

We will be opening the very first bottles, so drop in, enjoy the incredible local art, and raise a glass with your neighbours. We look forward to seeing you there!
