All types of drugs can interact with each other. These interactions can change how a drug affects you and may increase the risk of side effects, overdose or other unexpected reactions.

When you don’t know exactly what you’re taking, it can be even harder to predict how different substances will interact.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Avoid mixing drugs where possible. If you’re taking medication, talk to your pharmacist or medical practitioner about potential interactions including with alcohol or other drugs.

If you’re worried about your own or someone else’s alcohol or other drug use, talking to someone you trust can be a good place to start.

That might be a friend, parent or guardian, manager, teacher or support person, whoever you feel comfortable talking to.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Speaking openly can help you get information, support and guidance before things become more difficult. You don’t need to have all the answers, start with a conversation.

Before taking a medicine, take a moment to familiarise yourself with the recommended guidelines. Knowing the dosage, potential risks, side effects and storage instructions can help you use medicines safely.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Read the Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) that comes with your medication and follow the recommended dose. If you’re unsure about anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Using alcohol or other drugs on a hot, sunny day can affect how you feel in a different way to using them in cooler conditions.

Heat, sun exposure, dehydration and the time of day can all influence how your body responds.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Check the weather and think about your environment before using. Stay hydrated, seek shade or shelter, and take breaks from the heat.

Are you planning to use alcohol or other drugs with people you know and trust, or with people who are new to you?

Feeling comfortable and safe with the people around you can influence your experience and how you respond to alcohol and other drugs.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Stay with people you trust, let someone know what you’ve taken, and look out for each other. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, move somewhere you feel more secure or seek help.

Differences in body size and composition can influence how a substance is distributed and processed in the body, meaning the same substance and amount may affect two people very differently.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Don’t assume that because a particular amount affected someone else one way, it will affect you the same way.

An overdose can happen to anyone, particularly when the strength or contents of a substance are unknown or when drugs are mixed.

Signs of a possible overdose can include being difficult to wake, losing consciousness, slow or unusual breathing, choking, gurgling or snoring sounds, or blue/grey lips or skin.

💡 Harm reduction tip: If you think someone may be overdosing, call 000 immediately. If opioids may be involved, give naloxone if available and follow the operator’s instructions.

Always check the expiry date before taking medication.

And if you have leftover medication from a previous illness or condition, don’t assume it’s safe to use again. The medication may not be appropriate for what you’re experiencing now, and the dose or treatment may no longer be right for you.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Check with your pharmacist or medical practitioner before using leftover medication, even if it was previously prescribed to you.

If you’re using alcohol or other drugs in a remote or isolated area, think ahead about how you would access help in an emergency.

Consider whether you have phone reception, a charged phone, a first aid kit, transport, or someone nearby who could get help if needed.

💡 Harm reduction tip: Before using, make a plan for how you’d get help — and let someone you trust know where you are.
