Some great news to come out of last week, 5th Engineer Regiment member SGT Newton Thaiposri has chanced upon some military history for sale online and decided to take the opportunity to purchase it and subsequently donate that history to the Australian Army Museum of Military Engineering. This sign that was displayed at the front of the “Initial Employment Training Squadron” has great personal significance to SGT Thaiposri and to many other combat Engineers that would have been posted here in the past. Great to see a piece of history find its way back home School of Military Engineering - Army

Some of the final pack up as we completed EX TORO RUN in September. This 434 had just finished tearing down all the hard work that members of 5 ER put in over the weekend placing route denial obstacles and conducting force protection works.

Our recently completed EX TORO RUN at Singleton saw 5 ER conduct route denial and vital asset protection tasks. Here we have SPR Farrelly on security while his troop continue to work on developing force protection in the form of HESCO baskets just behind him.

Australian soldier Sapper Liam Waterhouse is serving with the 5th Engineer Regiment - Australian Army 5th Engineer Regiment (5ER), having enlisted in the Army in July 2018.

In 2023 after a year away from the Army to concentrate on his civilian job, he came back to the Regiment to take part in the Reserve Accelerated Training Scheme (RATS).

Under the scheme, Reserve soldiers like Sapper Waterhouse undertake a period of fulltime service during which they can complete a number of critical courses in order to more quickly build personal and unit capabilities.

Sapper Waterhouse says he wants to transfer from his current category of combat engineer to a plant operator, a role which requires a long time training commitment and is difficult to complete on a part time basis.

Since starting the RATS, Sapper Waterhouse has completed a range of courses including driver, promotion and a Civil Construction Plant Course.

He says the RATS program allows him to expand his knowledge and qualifications to better help himself and the Regiment.

The 5th Engineer Regiment is a unit of the NSW-based 5th Brigade. As part of the 2nd (Australian) Division, the 5th Brigade has as one of its key missions the delivery of an enhanced domestic security and response capability to support security in northern Australia – a task it will support on Talisman Sabre 2025
