Steam-Powered Trams

Can you recognise the location of this tram from the early 1900s? Although the district has changed dramatically, it is still possible to identify this as the corner of Coronation Parade and Liverpool Road, Strathfield South. Steam-powered trams ran from Enfield to Ashfield between 1891 and 1912, when the service was electrified. In 1901 the service was expanded through Burwood and Concord to Mortlake with a branch line to Cabarita completed in 1907. A double track was added in 1915.

Join us for a workshop with Reverse Garbage to learn about the environmental impact of fast fashion and get tips for hand sewing to repair your clothes and save them from landfill!

You can bring along your own clothing items to mend or use the recycled fabric scraps provided at the workshop to build your confidence in hand sewing.

Bushrangers

As main roads developed during the early days of colonial settlement, lawlessness increased, especially amongst escaped convicts who preyed on travellers. The Homebush district was known to be ‘particularly infested with Knights of the Road.’

Australia’s first bushranger, John Black Caesar was killed at Liberty Plains (Strathfield) in 1796. D’arcy Wentworth’s coachman was bailed up by bushrangers in 1827 but made a lucky escape. Home Bush Farm itself was robbed in 1829 when £50 worth of property was stolen.

Strathfield Council Library & Innovation Hub are getting ready for some School Holiday Fun, and your school aged kids are welcome to join us!

Textile Repair Workshops with Reverse Garbage (Ages 13+) 🪡👚

At this workshop you will learn about the fast fashion crisis from a waste and materials perspective. We will look at what clothes are conventionally made of and how it impacts our environment, reflecting on actions we can take for a sustainable future. To support your skills there will be time to learn more about at home repairs or crafts, ultimately building your confidence to approach hand sewing!

This program is funded by the NSW EPA
Please note that this program is strictly for attendees ages 13 plus.
