Did you know Pennant Hills Road began as an Aboriginal track used for seasonal travel and later became a vital timber route in the early 1800s? (Source Hornsby Shire Historical Society).

Convict road gangs built the road to haul prized blue gum and stringybark timber from Pennant Hills to Ermington Wharf, with much of it exported overseas

As the forests gave way to orchards and settlers moved in, the road became a key link between Parramatta to Hornsby, shaping the growth of surrounding suburbs. By the early 1900s, weekend drives along Pennant Hills Road were a leisure activity, offering scenic views of citrus groves and bushland.

Today, Pennant Hills Road is one of Sydney’s busiest corridors, connecting the M1 and M2 and serving thousands of commuters and freight vehicles daily. The opening of NorthConnex in 2020 marked a new chapter, easing congestion and preserving the legacy of this historic route.

🥊 Remember hearing the stories about boxing at the old Hornsby Stadium?

Long before television bouts and modern gyms, boxing had a proud and passionate following in Hornsby. While the first recorded Australian prize fight took place in January 1814, the sport became widely accepted by the 1890s, with gymnasiums openly teaching boxing and hosting matches across the country.

From 1948, locals packed into the Pacific Cabaret, then known as Hornsby Stadium, to watch live boxing matches. The venue became a proving ground for homegrown talent, with names like Ray Skelton, Noel Peterson and Des Helyard featured on advertising leaflets distributed far and wide. But the biggest drawcard was local lad Arnold Hamilton, whose rise to State Champion earned him a strong and loyal following right here in Hornsby.

Other familiar names included Midge Brodie, a champion boxer who lived in Burdett Street, and ‘Gubber’ Jordinson, a long-time Hornsby resident who claimed a Bantamweight championship before going on to successful careers in other sports after hanging up the gloves.

🧶 Creativity, connection and community spirit was on display at Neighbourhood Knit at Hornsby Library last Friday, with knitters sharing skills, showcasing handmade blankets and enjoying friendly competition.

Mayor Warren Waddell, Councillor Dr Verity Greenwood and Councillor Jane Seaglove - Hornsby Shire Council helped create knitted and crocheted squares that will be stitched into blankets for Wrap With Love Inc. These blankets are distributed through local and international aid agencies, providing warmth and comfort to people in need.

This year’s event included a series of fun challenges, from a fast-paced crochet race to blind knitting and a lively potato sack race! 🪡🧶

More than just knitting and crocheting, the morning was about bringing people together, building friendships and giving back to the community through a shared purpose.

📚 A big thank you to Kathryn Heyman for the wonderful author talk last week at Hornsby Library. Kathryn was joined by fellow author Anna Downes, as they discussed Kathryn’s latest novel Circle of Wonders, a thought-provoking novel about facing death while rediscovering life.
Kathyrn described the book as a celebration of life and encouraged us all to join the circle, a welcoming space for conversation. Kathryn and Anna’s conversations were both entertaining and inspiring.
