Wimmera CMA The lead natural resources management agency in the Wimmera in Western Victoria.

The Victorian Government established the Wimmera CMA in July 1997 as the peak natural resource management body, in the Wimmera, to develop and oversee the implementation of the Regional Catchment Strategy in an integrated and sustainable manner. Our prime responsibilities are the health of land and water in the catchment region and promoting sustainable and productive land use practices. This is achieved through local programs that identify and address improvements in the region’s natural assets. We have responsibilities under the CaLP Act 1994 with respect to pests, plants and animals, and land management and we also have statutory functions under the Water Act 1989 with respect to waterway, floodplain, and regional drainage management. Our work force of approximately 30 Staff and Community Board work in partnership with the Wimmera community and a range of organisations and stakeholders to protect and enhance the condition of the region’s natural resources. Some of the ways we are achieving this is through:
• environmental monitoring (surface water, groundwater, vegetation, salinity, and animal species)
• environmental water releases to help vegetation, animals, and water quality that underpins recreational and social activities
• advertising and promoting natural resource management funding and grants programs
• incentive programs that encourages and rewards landholders for environmental stewardship
• providing assistance in recovery after environmental events such as floods and fire
• supporting Landcare groups and local Landcare facilitators to plan and implement a wide variety of actions to meet community needs
• providing a variety of flood information for specific properties – flood extent maps, flood heights and insurance inquiries
• providing advice and permits to conduct Works on waterways.
• restoring waterways to help stabilise erosion
• running events and workshops about current environmental issues to build community capacity
• developing strategic documents for natural resource management based on local knowledge and leading science
• promoting sustainable and profitable farming practices
• developing investment proposals based on the input and involvement of stakeholders, partners, and community

📍Place shapes us and every catchment tells a different story.

Across Victoria, CMAs work with communities to protect and enhance the places we call home, turning local knowledge into local action.

Every catchment is different and so is every solution. That’s why your local CMA exists and is also part of something bigger.

We are here for the Wimmera.

Everyone is welcome! 💚

🌿 🌿Hollows for Habitat: Creating Home for Wildlife affected by fire

📅 Saturday, 24 October | 10am–3:30pm
📍 NC2, Natimuk

Join us for a free community event exploring ways to create habitat for wild life, featuring two approaches: nestboxes and “hollow-hog” carving tool.

Tree hollows are a critical habitat resource for many native species, but they can take decades or even centuries to develop naturally. So...Let's learn how we can supplement this habitat and support wildlife while our landscapes recover.

🪵 What’s on the program?
- Talks from guest speakers Nils Karlsson of Calypto Hollows and Bruce McInnes of Laharum Landcare.
- Explore the role of tree hollows in supporting native wildlife and options for supplementing natural hollows.
- Get hands-on with nestbox assembly.
- See a field demonstration of the “hollow-hog” carving tool in action.

🥪 Lunch provided. Households will have the opportunity to take a nestbox home, subject to availability.

Whether you’re involved in local revegetation, habitat restoration or broader Landcare activities, come along to share knowledge, explore practical techniques and contribute to restoring habitat for our local wildlife.
Free event!

This event is part of the "Restoring Natimuk – After the Fire" project, supported by Landcare Australia Victorian Bushfire Recovery Grants 2026.

A detailed program will be shared closer to the date.

🌾 Native grasslands are some of the Wimmera’s most threatened ecosystems, but they’re also some of our most important. 💚

Join the Grassland Field Day with Minyip & District Landcare Group and Dan Frost from Seeding Victoria to learn more about the role native grasses can play in healthy, resilient landscapes.

📍 Minyip & Boolite
📅 Sunday 25 October, 1.00-3.30pm

All welcome 🤗 Register below.

Join us for a grassland field day hosted by Minyip and District Landcare Group, featuring Dan Frost from Seeding Victoria.

Sunday 25th October, 1-3:30 pm
RSVP: https://www.yarrilinks.org.au/events/grassland-field-day

We’ll meet at Minyip Caravan park, followed by afternoon tea and then head to Boolite to check out a native grass pasture.

Grasslands are some of the most depleted ecosystems of our region, but yet revegetation efforts often focus on trees and shrubs. Yarrilinks is seeking to address this by building capacity, and growing knowledge and appreciation for grasslands, with an ultimate goal of increasing the grassy component of our reveg efforts.

PLEASE BRING:
Long pants and closed toe shoes as we will be walking through grassy areas
Hat, water bottle and sunscreen

This event is funded by a Victorian Landcare Grant from the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.

🐾 Guess who made a surprise appearance during water monitoring recently?

Our team was absolutely thrilled to spot a platypus while out in the field! 💙

Seeing a platypus in the Wimmera is a pretty special moment. We know they're out there, but they're masters of staying hidden and rarely show themselves. That's what made this sighting so exciting!

Moments like these remind us just how important our waterways are for supporting native wildlife.

Have you ever been lucky enough to spot a platypus in the wild? 👀
