Just another day in the life of an Auster emperor penguin chick 🐧❄️.

At the Auster colony near Mawson, chicks are growing up fast. Over the past month, Mawson expeditioners have watched them take an important step towards independence, swapping the warmth and security of their parents' feet for tightly packed groups called crèches.

As they grow, they'll develop waterproof feathers and begin shedding their soft down, transforming into juveniles almost as tall as their parents.
As the adults head out to sea to feed, the next generation is preparing for life on its own. Before long, these emperor penguin chicks will take to the water, learning to fish and fend for themselves in the icy Southern Ocean. 💙🐧

Today marks the second of the year! 🐦
Did you know there are two World Migratory Bird Days each year?
That's because birds migrate at different times depending on which hemisphere they're in.

One remarkable migratory species that breeds along the Antarctic coastline is the South Polar Skua (Stercorarius maccormicki).
These large, long-lived seabirds can reach speeds of up to 72 km/h and travel more than 10,000 kilometres each year.

As a migratory species, the South Polar Skua is protected under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a migratory species under the Japan-Australia Migratory Bird Agreement (JAMBA).

Wherever their journey takes them, migratory birds remind us just how connected our planet really is. 🌏

The Australian Antarctic Division has appointed its Station Leaders for the 2026/27 season at Casey, Davis and Mawson research stations.

Ahead of deployment, the new station leaders have completed Station Leader Technical Training, gaining a deeper understanding of Antarctic operations, science programs and station projects as they prepare to lead teams in some of Australia's most remote and challenging environments.

Over the next few weeks, we will introduce to each of our new leaders; Rebecca Jeffcoat, Saurabh Das, Aaron Perrin, Nick Graney and Tricia Finch.

Stay tuned!

'Antarctica is Melting', is an exhibition of black & white images from Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic by photographer and Australian Antarctic Arts Fellow David Neilson. They are the result of six journeys he has made south.

David was awarded Arts Fellowships in 1990 and 2004 and spent two summers photographing in East Antarctica based at Mawson Station.

He has also made three yacht-based journeys from South America to the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia, and his final journey south was to the Ross Sea region south of New Zealand.

Across images of ice, rock, sea and sky, Neilson captures the scale, beauty, and atmosphere of one of the world’s most remote regions. His photographs are quiet and carefully observed, inviting viewers to slow down and spend time with a landscape many people may never see in person.

It’s wonderful to see how Antarctica continues to influence Arts Fellows’ works throughout their careers, highlighting the profound impact travelling south has on Arts Fellows and their creative practice.

David’s exhibition can be viewed at Maritime Museum Tasmania in Argyle Street, Hobart until 1st November 2026.

It’s 35 years since the adoption of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty - the international agreement that designates Antarctica as a natural reserve, devoted to peace and science.

The Environment Protocol:
∙ bans mining
∙ establishes environmental principles for decision making in Antarctica
∙ requires environmental impact assessment for all activities
∙ provides for a system of protected areas, and;
∙ manages waste, wildlife interactions and biosecurity risks.

The comprehensive environmental protections provided by the Protocol are just as important today as they were when it was adopted. Australia remains committed to safeguarding Antarctica's unique environment and preserving it for future generations.
