These photos weren’t taken at night…
These photos depict the Currowan and Comberton fires on New Years Eve 2019 at 3pm, taken in Huskisson and Vincentia by a resident.
Three people lost their lives and hundreds of homes were lost on this day of Catastrophic fire weather in the Shoalhaven.
Whilst we not seeing fuel conditions on the ground that replicate the Black Summer fire conditions, the reality is that fires of this magnitude can occur again, so it’s important that we as a community are prepared.
Current conditions are drier than average, with ground moisture much lower than normal. Limited rain is forecast during Spring and the risk of hotter weather is high. Even a few days of hot, dry and windy weather will create potentially dangerous bush fire conditions. Fires may not be as wide spread as during Black Summer, but even a localised event could be devastating.
Get Ready Weekend is a yearly event put on by local NSW Rural Fire Service Brigades, like Huskisson Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade.
Get Ready Weekend is about educating the community on the risk of bushfires and what can be done to mitigate and prevent loss.
Join us at our station, behind the cinema on Owen Street from 10:00 to prepare - with stalls containing information to all residents on a range of topics, such as hazard reduction and bush fire survival planning.
Also starting at 10:30, 11:30 and 1PM, join our team for workshops on the following topics:
➡️ Technology and how it can help you stay informed 📲
➡️ Fire danger ratings and what they mean 🚨
➡️ Static Water Source (SWS) awareness 🌊
➡️ How to prepare your home for Bushfire 🔥
They’ll be a free BBQ on all day - have a snag with a local firefighter about what you can do to plan and be prepared.
Kids won’t miss out either - activities and free gifts will be available with truck tours and a go on the fire hose.
We hope to see all members of the community present - so share this post within your own networks.
