โ—Be aware of an elevated risk of nitrate poisoning in livestock as dry conditions persist

Fodder crops, pastures and w**ds grown during drought conditions can have nitrate levels above safe limits.

Sheep and cattle are usually able to tolerate and metabolise nitrates in the diet, however poisoning can occur when stock suddenly encounter high levels in the diet without an adaptation period.

Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, salivation and in extreme cases, sudden death.

Tips to avoid nitrate poisoning:

๐ŸŒฑ Avoid grazing hungry stock straight onto lush green feed - provide hay / roughage to reduce their appetite before moving to high-risk pasture

๐Ÿšœ Hay and silage can be high in nitrate. Testing feed will identify the level of risk and guide feeding strategies. Free feed tests are currently available for pickup through your nearest Local Land Services office.

๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ If you have recently applied nitrogen fertiliser, do not introduce stock into those paddocks until 2 weeks after the first rainfall event following application.

If you suspect livestock may have been poisoned, contact your private vet immediately or call your local District Veterinarian via 1300 795 299.

Could this invasive grass be hiding in your pasture?

Serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) is a priority w**d with an objective of containment in the Northern Tablelands and one of Australia's worst pasture w**ds.

It spreads easily by wind, has little to no feed value for livestock and can quickly take over pastures, reducing productivity and biodiversity.

๐Ÿ” Look for:
โ€ข fine, tightly bunched tussocks
โ€ข leaves that roll between your fingers
โ€ข purple seed heads in spring and summer
โ€ข plants that stand out above surrounding pasture.

โœ… Protect your property:
โ€ข learn how to identify serrated tussock
โ€ข control plants before they set seed
โ€ข check fodder, livestock, vehicles and machinery to prevent spread
โ€ข report and manage new infestations early.

๐Ÿ“ž Need help with identification or control? Contact your local Council Weeds Officer or Northern Tablelands Local Land Services.

Early detection and action are the best defence against serrated tussock. ๐ŸŒพ

Did you know that using a hay feeder can significantly reduce wasted feed?

Hay feeders reduce wastage compared with feeding directly on the ground by limiting trampling and soiling. Less wasted hay means more feed available to stock and better value from your feed budget.

If feeding on the ground:

๐Ÿšœ Spread hay evenly in long rows, leaving enough space for all animals to feed without being pushed out by dominant stock.
๐ŸŒฑ Choose clean, dry areas away from manure, mud and w**ds.
๐Ÿฎ Move feeding locations regularly to avoid a build-up of wasted hay and manure.

Whichever method you use, check that smaller and quieter animals are getting their share.

๐ŸŒฑ Could tropical grasses help fill summer feed gaps on your property?

While the Northern Tablelands is known for its cooler climate, many tropical grass species can remain productive for 5-6 months of the year, offering an opportunity to make better use of summer rainfall and increase feed production during the warmer months.

Meat & Livestock Australia's new Tropical Pastures for Livestock Production in NSW guide explores: โœ… The benefits of tropical grasses as part of your feedbase โœ… Improving groundcover and accessing water and nutrients โœ… Potential applications for integrated w**d control โœ… Species selection and suitability โœ… Establishment and management for long-term productivity โœ… Selecting and establishing companion legumes

Limited hard copies of the guide are available through the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services Sustainable Agriculture team.
