Help shape Buloke Shire’s future flood preparedness

Have you experienced flooding in your local area? Your knowledge could help improve future flood planning across Buloke Shire.

Mallee Catchment Management Authority is undertaking a Flood Study to update flood modelling and mapping for the Tyrrell and Lalbert Creek systems, as well as areas north of Birchip.

The study will help improve understanding of flood behaviour and support future flood preparedness and emergency planning.

💬 Local knowledge is important! Residents are encouraged to attend an upcoming community drop-in session to share their experiences, including photos, videos or observations of past flooding, drainage issues and flood impacts.

📍 Community drop-in sessions:
🔹 Birchip: Thursday 15 October, 12.50pm – 1.50pm | Birchip Senior Citizens Centre
🔹 Culgoa: Thursday 15 October, 2.45pm – 3.45pm | Culgoa Hall

Through the Water Cycle Adaptation Action Program, Mallee CMA is working in partnership with the First People of the Millewa-Mallee Aboriginal Corporation (FPMMAC) and Parks Victoria to plant more than 800 native plants including Black Box trees (Eucalyptus largiflorens) across various locations on Lindsay Island.

This work aims to stabilise vulnerable landscapes, reduce erosion, enhance native habitat values, and help protect significant cultural heritage sites for future generations.

To further support the success of the revegetation works, an exclusion fence has been installed to minimise damage from kangaroos and assist with the establishment of the newly planted vegetation.

Funded by the Victorian Government through the CMA Water Cycle Adaptation Action Program.

To increase the knowledge of botanical values of Tyrrell Creek in the Culgoa Township, Culgoa Landcare Group successfully applied for Victorian Government Landcare Grant funding to commission a floristic survey.
Four species were found that are listed as critically endangered on the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 Threatened List, with Cyperus bifax (Downs Nutgrass) and Cyperus concinnus (Trim Flat-sedge) occurring in less than 30 sites across the whole of Victoria!
This project provides important information to guide the group in future management of the site.
This project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) Victorian Landcare Grants program.

H5 bird flu update: 8 August
New South Wales has confirmed a detection of H5 bird flu in Wentworth, near the Victorian border and town of Mildura.

Residents along the river and throughout the region are encouraged to be aware and:
✅ AVOID contact with sick or dead wild birds or wildlife and their environment
✅ RECORD what you see, including location, species, how many
✅ REPORT to DEECA online or by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Report clusters (5 or more) of sick or dead wild birds of any species, anywhere in Victoria.

Report even one sick or dead:
✅ wild seabird, waterbird, shorebird or bird of prey
✅ marine mammal (e.g. seal, sea lion, dolphin).

We will assess each report and decide if testing and sampling are needed based on location and species type.
