This weekend, several of our brigade members and our wonderful CFU (Community Fire Unit) volunteers collaborated to complete some burns to assist in cleaning up in Lakewood Estate.
It's a great time of year to be preparing your property for the upcoming summer.
It's officially bushfire season, so you will need a permit to conduct burning, but all your information is easily found here -->

BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD- SNOWY MONARO LGA- COMMENCING THURSDAY 1ST OCTOBER, 2026.
FIRE PERMITS REQUIRED.
The Bush Fire Danger Period will commence at midnight tonight, Thursday 1st October, 2026, in the Snowy Monaro LGA and continue until 31st March, 2027.
From midnight tonight, a fire permit is required for all fires in the open (with the exception of cooking & small recreational fires).
With continuing dry conditions across the district their is a significant risk of fires readily igniting and travelling through the landscape.
We are calling on all members of the community to assist in keeping our community safe from fire over the coming months by taking all care to stop fire ignitions.
Some ways you can help are:
- Ensuring any cooking/recreational fires are fully extinguished (using water) before leaving unattended.
- Do not undertake hot works (welding/grinding) in the open during the hotter, windier times of the day.
- Do not undertake slashing or mowing during the hotter, windier times of the day.
- Avoid driving any vehicles in areas of dry grass during the hotter, windier times of the day.
- Maintain your vehicles, mowers and equipment ensuring there is no build up of dry grasses in areas that could cause them to catch fire.

BURN NOTIFICATIONS SUSPENDED โ€“ Sunday 20th September 2026
The Snowy Monaro is forecast to experience HIGH fire danger conditions on Sunday 20th September 2026. As a result, all burn notifications issued by the RFS have been suspended.
These conditions can create a real fire risk across our landscape, if you have been burning please check your previous burns.
ONE EMBER CAN END IT - Embers from a fire can spread quickly and quite a distance, putting communities well away from the main fire at risk.

With a new sticker or two and a name change in the computer aided dispatch system, Cooma 1B has today morphed into Jindabyne 1.

A spring chicken, 2005 Isuzu F3 FTS 6 speed 4WD with a great low range, seating for 6, carrying around 3200 Lts of water put out through a twin impeller pump. It will wear the Jindabyne name proudly.

Last week we watched Jindabyne 2, our long cared for truck, depart on her final mission to Cooma Fire Control Centre for retirement, after 26 years of service to the public for the NSW RFS.
Although like all older trucks she had her quirks, we will miss her uncertain synchros, the on/off brake pedal when cold (which found out more than one person in the back seat that neglected to fasten their seat belt in time) along with her shagged out suspension which necessitated the driver to call out upcoming bumps in the road so the crew in the rear seat could hang on.
Despite these, and a few more, it was astounding the places in the bush this middle weight tanker would take us, it's reliable capability being tested on many occasions, but importantly bringing the crew back safely every time.
Thank you to the team at NSW RFS - Snowy Monaro District for arranging a replacement Cat 1 tanker at short notice with Jindy 2 sadly succumbing to an electrical fault.
Also thanks and apologies to the crew from Cooma Rural Fire Brigade for having to give up, as we understand it, one of your most favoured tankers to help us out.
A big thank you also to the crews who have maintained and looked after the truck for nearly three decades, with a special shout out to our Equipment Officer Ken, who has gone above and beyond to keep the old Izuzu in running order for so long, through all that the Snowy Mountains has to offer.

Last night, our brigade gathered for an evening together to recognise our long serving members and their contribution to the community. It was a special occasion shared with not just our current members, but also two of our long standing former Captains as special guests along with the original Fire Control Officer for our area, Barry Aitchison OAM to present the medals.
With around 300 years of volunteer service being recognised, it was amazing to come together and share a meal, a drink or two, plenty of laughs and lots of good stories.
A huge thank you to all who attended and a special mention to the families of our members who support them.

Following community feedback, the NSW RFS has removed the 21-day limit on Burn Notifications outside of the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP).

This means you can now submit a Burn Notification for any length of time during non-BFDP, without having to renew every 21 days.

You will still need to notify your neighbours at least 24 hours prior to lighting up.

All brigade members are encouraged to attend.

31/03/2026

Today, 31 March, marks the end of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the majority of NSW. However, due to the ongoing fire risk, the BFDP will be extended in four Local Government Areas, including Gwydir, Mid-Western, Moree Plains and Narrabri.

While many landholders may no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the RFS and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.

For more information on the bush fire danger period and fire permits, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP
