⚠️🔥 EXTREME FIRE DANGER FOR MONDAY
- GREATER

Posted: 7:04PM, Sunday 20 September

Warm and very dry conditions, combined with moderate to fresh and gusty west to northwesterly winds, will result in elevated fire danger across the Greater Hunter district. A cool, moderate to fresh and gusty south to southeasterly wind change is expected to reach the Hunter coastal areas around midday, before moving through inland parts of the Greater Hunter during the afternoon and evening.

These are dangerous fire conditions. People in the following Local Government Areas are advised to take action now;

🟧 Greater Hunter- Cessnock; Dungog; Lake Macquarie; Maitland; Muswellbrook; Newcastle; Port Stephens; Singleton; Upper Hunter

Check your bush fire plan and ensure that your property is fire ready. If a fire starts, take immediate action. If you and your property are not prepared to the highest level, go to a safer location well before the fire impacts. Reconsider travel through bush fire risk areas.

A Total Fire Ban will be in force for the Greater Hunter fire weather district from midnight. For information on what you can and cannot do during a Total Fire Ban, visit https://shorturl.at/nKGsO.

You may have seen the smoke in Abernethy today. NSW RFS Lower Hunter and a few Fire and Rescue NSW crews took part in a Hazzard reduction.
Weather conditions were favourable and they were able to reduce the fuel load through the bush on Ferguson St down to the Abernethy dam.
You may see small fires through the bush tonight, and burning logs, this is completely normal, and may go on for a few days. There are RFS patrols in Abernethy tonight, they will be monitoring the situation.
While care is taken to start these burns with a low intensity, sometimes wildlife can be injured. If you find any wildlife needing help call WIRES.
We can all feel a bit more relaxed with fuel cleared for what’s reported to be a very hot summer coming.
