🦇 Have you noticed flying foxes in unusual places lately, roosting in backyards, parks and other locations where they are not normally seen?

This can occur when food is scarce and flying foxes need to travel further to find flowering and fruiting trees. Rather than returning to established camps, some animals may remain close to available food sources to conserve energy.

Flying foxes play an important role in the environment. As they feed, they pollinate native plants and disperse seeds across large distances, helping to regenerate forests and support biodiversity. Many native species, including koalas, benefit from the healthy ecosystems they help sustain.

If you see a flying fox that is sick, injured, orphaned or entangled in netting, wire or fencing, do not touch or handle it. Contact FAWNA NSW INC on 6581 4141 for assistance.

If you find a dead flying fox, never touch or pick it up with your bare hands. Information about reporting dead flying foxes on public land, advice for private property owners and safe carcass disposal is available on our website.

🚧 Fixing roads starts below the surface

Roads are something our community cares deeply about. Ever wondered how we decide which roads need patching, resealing or a bigger upgrade?

Before any decisions are made, we often need to find out what's happening underneath the road itself.

You may have noticed Council staff and contractors carrying out geotechnical investigations around the shire. These investigations involve drilling, sampling and testing the materials below the road surface.

Think of it a bit like getting an X-ray before treatment. It helps our engineers understand what's causing issues beneath the road and what solution is most likely to deliver the best long-term result. Sometimes the problem is obvious from the surface. Other times the real story is hidden underneath.

Making the right decision is critical to getting the best road network we can, given limited resources prioritising becomes incredibly important. By taking the time to investigate first, we can make more informed decisions about how roads are maintained across the shire.

🔎 Did you see any of these works going on recently?

This is post 1 of a 3-part series – Roads explained.
