Keysborough Fire Brigade 'Like' us to get warnings, safety updates and news from the Keysborough Fire Brigade. Volunteer fire fighters do not only attend fire calls.

The Keysborough Fire Brigade was officially named in 1956 after being established as an offshoot of the Dandenong Bush Fire Brigade. The Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigade has been located in Chapel Road Keysborough since its creation and continues to run solely off the work of committed volunteers. Servicing Keysborough, Noble Park and Springvale, the Keysborough Fire Brigade is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to the significant commitment to protecting and serving the community, the Keysborough Fire Brigade is also largely responsible for its own fundraising, requiring further time and commitment from hardworking volunteers and their families. It is not uncommon to find Keysborough Fire Brigade members busily cooking sausages outside Keysborough Bunnings. The importance of volunteer fire fighters and their amazing commitment to serving local communities was never more evident than during the tragic Black Saturday fires of 2009, in which members of the Keysborough Fire Brigade were actively involved. It is vital that local communities never forget the willingness and courage shown by fire fighters during the tragedy of 2009. It is with those same qualities that volunteers continue to serve the local community every single day. The Keysborough Fire Brigade responds to assistance calls for motor vehicle accidents, wildfires, structure fires, chemical spills and gas leaks. The Keysborough Fire Brigade also provides valuable education to the local area on fire prevention and safety procedures. Other far more light-hearted uses of the fire truck include the transportation of Santa around community streets at Christmas and local events. While the sacrifices of time, and sometimes sleep, may seem unappealing to some, volunteers and their families report feeling a sense of pride and satisfaction at providing such a vital and necessary service. Serving as a volunteer fire fighter provides locals with new skills, which benefits them in their professional and personal lives. New volunteers are always welcome at the Keysborough Fire Brigade. Full training and protective equipment is provided to ensure the safety of members, as well as the opportunity to enjoy the social benefits of belonging to a team of like-minded volunteers. Volunteers can be students, full-time and part-time workers, unemployed or retired people. While volunteer fire fighters are obviously in strong demand, the Keysborough Fire Brigade has a wide range of duties and positions that also require the time and commitment of volunteers, such as fundraising, communications, administration and community education.

πŸ“žπŸš’ You call 000 - what happens next?

When you call Triple Zero (000), a call taker takes the details of the emergency.

While you’re still on the phone, those details are sent to a dispatcher, who assesses the information and sends the job to the appropriate emergency services - including a message to your local fire brigade.

🚨 So, what do we see?

Our pagers receive a message containing information about the incident, such as the type of emergency, location and other important details.

Once we tell FIRECOM that we're responding, they can provide us with any additional information the caller has given since the initial pager message.

All of this happens quickly - helping us get the right crews and appliances moving towards you as soon as possible. πŸš’πŸ’¨

So when you call 000, stay on the line, answer the questions and follow the call taker's instructions.

πŸ”₯πŸš’ Wait… Keysborough is an urban area. Why do we train for bushfires?

Being part of the CFA means our members respond locally, but we can also be called upon to support incidents anywhere across Victoria - and even further afield when needed.

When large fires occur, many hands are needed, and we’re part of that response.

That’s why we train every year in bushfire firefighting and safety.

Recently, you may have seen the Dandenong Tanker around Keysborough. We were using it to practise our running grass fire attack, giving both newer and experienced members the chance to train on the crew deck and experience what it may be like at a real incident.

πŸš’πŸš¨ Have you ever seen a fire truck responding with lights and sirens, maybe go through an amber or red light, and then suddenly turn the lights and sirens off and continue driving normally?

There’s usually a reason!

Recently, one of our Keysborough CFA trucks was responding lights and sirens to support our emergency services colleagues at an incident.

While we were on the way, another fire truck arrived at the scene first. They assessed the situation and advised us over the radio that our assistance was no longer required.

So what did we do?

🚨 Lights and sirens off
πŸš’ Back to normal driving
βœ… Continuing safely to the station

This can happen for a number of reasons. For example:

β€’ Another appliance may arrive first and determine that additional crews aren't required.
β€’ The incident may be under control.
β€’ Police or another emergency service may pass on updated information.
β€’ Our crew may still be required, but the urgency has changed.

It doesn't mean there wasn't an emergency. It simply means the situation has changed and the crew has been given different instructions.

When you see an emergency vehicle using lights and sirens, please give way and allow them to pass safely. You never know what they are responding to - or how quickly they may need to get there.

And if you see the lights and sirens turn off, please don't assume they're "just having a drive"! πŸ˜„

πŸš’πŸ”₯ Supporting our FRV colleagues when they need a hand! πŸ”₯πŸš’

Recently, Keysborough CFA was dispatched to assist our FRV colleagues with a car fire while they were busy responding to other incidents in their area.

We were advised that the vehicle was producing a large amount of black smoke, and our crew quickly turned out to assist.

Within minutes, our crew arrived on scene and immediately began working to ensure the scene was safe and assist with managing the incident.

🚨πŸ”₯ When the unexpected happens - it’s important to know what to do! πŸ”₯🚨

Recently, our crews were dispatched to a stove fire at a local property.

When we arrived, the occupants had already taken action using a fire blanket and fire extinguisher that were easily accessible.

Their quick response helped stop the fire from spreading and significantly reduced the amount of damage to the property.

Our CFA crew still attended the scene to:
πŸš’ Ensure the fire was completely extinguished
πŸ” Check for any remaining hazards
❀️ Check that everyone was safe and uninjured

πŸ‘ Fantastic work by the occupants of this property!

Having the right equipment readily available - and knowing how to use it - can make a huge difference during an emergency.

This is a great reminder to make sure you have appropriate fire safety equipment in your home and know where it is before you need it.

Remember: if you have a fire or emergency, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000).

πŸ”₯πŸš’ Fire season has started early! πŸš’πŸ”₯

While we might still be early in the season, our volunteers have already been out supporting our CFA colleagues at incidents across the area.

Last week, our Ultra Light Tanker (ULT) was dispatched Code 1 - lights and sirens - to a grass and scrub fire.

Two of our Lieutenants attended the incident and spent many hours on scene, working alongside other CFA crews to assist with bringing the fire under control.

It was a huge effort from everyone involved, and another great example of our volunteers stepping up when the community needs us.

This is just another way Keysborough CFA goes above and beyond for our community. β€οΈπŸ’›
