A prescribed burn is planned on private land at Dudley West on Kangaroo Island from Sunday 18 to Monday 19 October, weather conditions permitting.

The prescribed burn will start at 10:00am on Sunday and is likely to be completed by 8:00pm on Monday. Flames and smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.

โ—พ The area to be burnt is 55.8 hectares.
โ—พ The burn will occur on the south side of East West Road, Dudley West, approximately 5 kilometres east southeast of Baudin Beach.
โ—พ This is a landscape protection burn.
โ—พ No roads will be closed throughout the burn, but traffic management contractors will be on site and may reduce traffic speed and flow to one lane on a short section of East West Road.
โ—พ East West Road may be impacted by smoke.

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.

NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity.

Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.

๐ŸŒฑ Free sheoaks to help KIโ€™s glossies!

Kangaroo Island landholders can register now for free drooping sheoak seedlings, tree guards and stakes for winter 2027 planting.

๐ŸŒณ These trees will help expand feeding habitat for our endangered Kangaroo Island glossy black-cockatoos. In dry years, sheoaks produce fewer new cones, so planting more trees helps build the birdsโ€™ future food supply.

Since 2020, 133 landholders have planted more than 33,000 sheoaks through this conservation effort. Join them and help our glossies thrive! ๐Ÿ’š

To take part, youโ€™ll need to:
๐Ÿ“ Plant within or near our priority areas
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Share your planting location
๐Ÿ“ธ Send a photo of your sheoaks in the ground after planting

Contact our team to check whether your property qualifies.

๐Ÿ“… Register your interest by January 2027, confirm numbers by February and collect from the KI Native Plant Nursery in Mayโ€“June 2027.

๐Ÿ“ง Email [email protected] for Karleah Berris with your property location and the number of seedlings youโ€™d like.
โ˜Ž๏ธ Or call (08) 8553 2476.

๐Ÿ–ค ๐ŸชฝThis initiative supports the Kangaroo Island Landscape Boardโ€™s Glossy Black-Cockatoo Recovery Program. The seedlings are funded through the Climate-proofed Cockatoos project, supported by the South Australian Governmentโ€™s Landscape Priorities Fund.

๐Ÿง๐ŸŒฟ **MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK!** ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿง

Weโ€™re calling on some wonderful volunteers to lend a hand with a **manual w**d removal day around the Penneshaw Penguin Rookery**.

๐Ÿ“… **Friday 16th October**
โฐ **From 9am**
๐Ÿ“ Penneshaw Penguin Rookery

We are currently experiencing issues with **common ice plant, thistles, invasive grasses and boxthorn** throughout areas of the rookery. These w**ds can take over important penguin habitat, so weโ€™d love some extra hands to help us tackle them.

For now, the focus will be on w**ds that can be safely removed by hand. **We are still looking into the safest and most appropriate way to remove the boxthorn**, particularly given its size, thorns and location around penguin habitat.

๐ŸŒฑ **No sprays. No chemicals.**
We want to keep our approach as natural as possible while protecting the penguins and their habitat.

๐Ÿงค Some gloves and equipment will be provided, but if you have your own gardening gloves or suitable hand tools, feel free to bring them along.

๐ŸŒญ **BBQ lunch and refreshments provided!**

Whether you can stay for an hour or spend the morning with us, every extra pair of hands will make a difference.

๐Ÿ’ฌ **Please DM us to let us know youโ€™re coming so we have an idea of numbers and can make sure we get the catering right!**

Come along, get your hands dirty and help us give our little penguinsโ€™ backyard a spring clean. ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฑ KI landholders: donโ€™t miss funding to improve your property!

Been putting off fencing a creek line, planting native vegetation or improving stock access across a waterway? Our On-ground Works Grants Program could help with the cost.

Funding is available for:
โœ… Fencing to protect creek lines and native vegetation
โœ… Native planting to restore areas beside waterways
โœ… Stock crossings to reduce erosion
โœ… Moving livestock watering points away from creeks and rivers.

All Kangaroo Island landholders are eligible to apply. Projects of all sizes are encouraged.

โฐ Applications close at 5 pm Sunday 11 October 2026.

Start your application todayโ€”give yourself time to get it submitted before the deadline.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Read the guidelines and apply: https://www.landscape.sa.gov.au/ki/community-connections/funding/kangaroo-island-on-ground-works-funding-2

Unsure whether your project fits or need help applying? Contact Kym Lashmar on 08 8553 2476 or email [email protected].

Know a landholder who could benefit? Please share this post ๐Ÿ™

๐ŸŒฑ Funding is now open to help KI landholders undertake practical projects that improve waterway health, strengthen productive farmland and protect our Kangaroo Islandโ€™s biodiversity.

Funding may support:

๐Ÿ’ง fencing to protect creek lines and riparian vegetation
๐ŸŒฟ revegetation with native tube stock
๐Ÿ„ stock crossings that reduce erosion and sediment
๐Ÿšฐ relocating livestock watering points away from waterways

All Kangaroo Island landholders are eligible to apply, with priority given to projects in northern catchments and works that benefit threatened species and ecological communities.

You donโ€™t need to begin with a huge project. Every creek line protected, native seedling planted or waterway restored contributes to healthier farms, healthier catchments and a more resilient Kangaroo Island.

๐Ÿ“… Applications close Sunday 11 October 2026.

Find out more and apply:
https://www.landscape.sa.gov.au/ki/news/funding-now-open-for-on-ground-works-on-kangaroo-island

This project is funded by the South Australian Government.

๐Ÿ“ธ Wisanger farmer Bek Bott and Kangaroo Island Landscape Board Narrow-leaved Mallee Project Officer Kym Lashmar inspect a riparian revegetation project on the Bott family's property. More than 2,100 native seedlings were planted in 2025 to improve water quality, strengthen biodiversity and build farm resilience, with a further 2,000 seedlings planned this year.
