On Sunday (the 1st of November 2026), we took part in the Strzelecki Group of Fire Brigades Group Exercise that was held at Nyora.
With over 60 firefighters taking part, it was good opportunity to prepare for the upcoming fire season.
This exercise was based around three differing scenarios, all of which involved a wildfire occurring around Nyora.
The firefighters from our brigade were deployed as part of a strike team (which is a team of different trucks) with our captain undergoing mentoring to be a strike team leader. This strike team was deployed to the Wuchatsch Reserve to fight a (simulated) running grass fire and then was deployed to Cherry Tree Road where they undertook asset protection (protecting valuable infrastructure).
These exercises are invaluable for learning and refreshing skills, including operating on different trucks, and developing relationships with different brigades across our local area.
This exercise also featured a CFA (Country Fire Authority) Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (‘drone’) demonstration which is used for aerial observation and command and control, supporting the mobile command vehicle from District 10 that attended.
The exercise was concluded in the afternoon, with catering provided by the Narre Warren Fire Brigade CFA.
