Before you light that Fire
π₯ How Do Bush Fires Start? Let's Bust a Common Myth π₯
A common perception in our area is that many bush fires are started by people conducting burn-offs with a Fire Permit.
The reality is that fires start from a range of causes, including lightning, vehicles and machinery, powerlines, accidental causes, and unfortunately, fires lit unlawfully. Not every fire is the result of a planned burn.
The NSW RFS supports responsible landholders using fire to manage their properties. We don't want to discourage people from burning. In fact, we encourage those doing the right thing to contact their local brigade. We're happy to have a conversation, provide advice, and may even be able to assist.
When burning, do it responsibly. Follow NSW RFS Safe Burning guidelines, obtain a permit, establish suitable control lines, and ensure you have the people and equipment needed to keep the fire contained.
When someone lights a fire, it starts with a choice. If you're not sure it's safe, don't light it. Ask for help first.
Fires lit unlawfully, or fires that escape containment, may be investigated by the NSW RFS. Substantial fines and imprisonment can apply for breaches of the Rural Fires Act 1997, and those responsible may also face civil action for any losses or damage caused.
Safe burning is everyone's responsibility.
