πŸ”₯ Fighting Fire from a Flood Boat πŸ”₯

On Tuesday, 2nd September, during a helicopter patrol of the large bushfire burning between Kununurra and Lake Argyle, a spot fire was spotted dangerously close to Maxwell Camp. The rugged terrain meant fire trucks couldn’t get anywhere near it, so a quick call was made to think outside the box β€” using the Kununurra SES flood rescue boat to get firefighters upriver to the blaze.

By midday, a combined crew was mobilised:
β€’ 🚀 3 from Kununurra SES
β€’ 🌿 2 from Packsaddle Bush Fire Brigade
β€’ πŸš’ 1 from Kununurra VFRS

Together, this small but determined team headed upriver armed with hand tools and a portable pump system. After nearly four hours of hard slog in extreme terrain, and with the help of the camp owner, the fire was finally contained and brought under control.

πŸ‘ A huge thank you goes out to the crew β€” Andrew O, Jake, Matt T, Scott R, Darren S, and Josh B. Your teamwork and commitment made all the difference.

We’d also like to thank their employers for supporting them and allowing time away from work to keep our community safe.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to one of our much loved and respected volunteers. On 6/8/25, Scotty passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. He faced MND with incredible strength and bravery, right to the end.

Scotty was an incredible person. He filled the room with his joyful and outgoing personality. His ability to connect with people, share a laugh and always be up for a chat made him such a loved person in not only Kununurra SES, but to the Kununurra community as well as the Kimberley DFES community.

Being jack-of-trades, Scotty was skilful across many aspects of SES. He was a leader , being appointed Local Manager of the Unit before myself, as well as a senior member amongst the Vertical Rescue and Flood Rescue Boat crews. Before he passed, Scotty was awarded his 10yr SES Service Medal for his ongoing service to the Kununurra community.

Gosh, we're all going to miss Scotty.

Our thoughts, wishes and prayers go out to Kato, the kids, their extended family and their loved ones through this time of sadness.

Echoing the wishes of Kato, donations in Scotty’s honour can be made to MNDAWA: https://www.mndawa.asn.au/my-fundraising/3298/team-scotty

Thank you

Matt Rosher
Local Manager

Last week our volunteers took on the Vertical Rescue course - an intense training program that prepares responders to carry out rescues over steep terrain πŸŒ„πŸœ it's tough work, but our team nailed it! Just in time for the busy dry season too.

Big thanks to the DFES Kimberley team and Melville State Emergency Service - SES for their guidance and expertise.

🧑 National Volunteer Week 🧑

This week, we proudly recognise the incredible dedication of not only our own State Emergency Service volunteers, but all volunteers across DFES and the wider community.

Every day, volunteers around Australia give up their time, energy and expertise to support and protect their communities, often in challenging circumstances.

If you see someone in SES orange anytime around Kununurra, give them a wave or a thank you πŸ‘‹

Over the weekend, some of members completed the Chainsaw Operator course focusing on safety, familiarisation, maintenance, cutting, and using mechanical supports. These skills are crucial when it comes to clearing fallen trees after big wet season storms β›ˆοΈ Congratulations to all our members!
