Council understands how much the community values established trees and green spaces, and we want to let residents know about some tree removal and landscaping works.

As part of the Civic Heart Project, seven existing trees in the open space between Roxy Lane and Bloore Street and around the library are being removed.

One of the larger trees must be removed to allow for the construction of an accessible path connecting the library and the Supper Room of the Kyogle Memorial Institute that meets Disability Discrimination Act requirements.

While it is unfortunate to lose these established trees, the project will bring significant new plantings to the area. More than 120 new trees will be planted, including more than 20 mature trees between 2.5 and 6 metres tall.

Tree removal works started at 7am today. Initial works will focus on the large tree and are expected to take around three to four hours.

For public safety, work areas are clearly marked and Council staff are on site to assist pedestrians. Parking and path access immediately around the large tree will be temporarily affected.
Council thanks the community for its patience and understanding while we work to create a greener more accessible Civic Heart.

🍓 Kitchen caddies for the win 🥬

One of the most effective ways to keep your scraps separated is to have a mini bin on your kitchen bench top.

Use it strictly for food waste and, when it gets full, simply transfer the scraps to your big wheelie green-lid Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin.

Whatever you do, don’t use your FOGO bin for rubbish meant for landfill (like plastic bags). It’s important not to ruin the compost.

Kitchen caddies and compostable kitchen caddy liners are available for purchase from Council's Administration Building.

🚧 Works Update - 14 October 2026 🚧

Work on Stage 1 of the $2.5 million Civic Heart Project began last week. Stage 1 delivers the heart of the project by transforming the space between the Library and Council Chambers into a welcoming civic plaza where community can gather. The works include pedestrian pathways and forecourts, landscaping, seating, accessibility upgrades and supporting infrastructure.

The Clarkes Lane/Saville Street project continues to progress, with the bridge now complete and all handrails installed on both the bridge and approach sections. The shared path on the Clarkes Lane side has been completed to the Newpark vehicle entrance and crews continue upgrading stormwater drainage to accommodate the next section of footpath connecting to the Summerland Way path at the Newpark pedestrian entrance. Construction of the footpath on the Daleys Lane side of the bridge is also progressing.

Work commenced this week on an upgrade of Clarence Way near Hootens Road. The project involves a 1.4 km section of pavement strengthening, widening and overlay, expected to continue through to March 2027. The project is being delivered with support from The Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program (SLRIP) - an Australian Government funding scheme helping to improve safety, resilience and driving conditions.

Grading works are continuing throughout the Cawongla catchment, which remains a significant work area with a large number of roads affected by damage. Crews are also back in Collins Creek undertaking pothole repairs and grading works as part of the ongoing maintenance program.

On the Bruxner Highway project, crews returned to site this week to complete steel fixing for the base slabs on both sides of the culvert extension, with preparations also progressing for the upcoming concrete works.

Flood damage works wrap up:

🔹 Iron Pot Creek Road: Council continues to monitor the landslip
🔹 Baileys Bridge Road: Completed
🔹 Gradys Creek Road landslip: Rock treatment wall and piling platform completed. Piling to commence this month.
🔹 Richmond River/Bowling Club Slip: Slip 1 and 2 completed, final slip completed this week
🔹 Williams Road landslip: Soil nailing in progress

Meanwhile, reconstruction works on Gardener Lane are continuing, with crews currently backfilling driveways to restore property access and undertaking general site clean-up activities.

A new round of water main renewal works is also set to commence this week in Rous Street, Mount Street, Fairy Street, Earl Street and Roseberry Street. To date, 1.25 kms of ageing cast iron water mains have been replaced, and completion of these streets will bring the total renewed to 2.5 kms, representing a quarter of Council's 10 km renewal target.

🏊 WOODENBONG POOL TO RE-OPEN ON FRIDAY 🎉

Prior to opening for the 2026-27 season Council’s facilities maintenance crew battled with poor weather to complete work on Woodenbong pool, grinding the surface back to bare concrete before epoxy coating the walls to create a smooth surface before they repainted and resealed the expansion joints as well as repairing damaged tiles, as well as improvements to the swim club space and enclosure of the adjacent storage space.

Kyogle pool also underwent an extensive refurbishment with works including the removal of the deteriorated existing coating, repairs to pool tiles and grouting around the pool hob, resealing of expansion joints, upgrades to the pool's electrical earthing system, inspection and cleaning of pipelines, and the application of a new pool coating and lap lane markings. Additional improvements included reinstating the fence surrounding the splash park and improvements to the canteen facility.

Bonalbo pool underwent a full filtration and disinfection system upgrade in line with works completed in Woodenbong in 2025, including the decommissioning and demolishing of the old system, upgrading the power supply and switchboard on the site, levelling of the aged concrete floor, installation of new pumps and filters including internal pipework and fittings, and upgrades to the chemical dosing pumps and equipment on site. Bonalbo pool will be emptied and resurfaced in 2027.

The improvements have modernised the pool systems at Woodenbong and Bonalbo, providing more efficient and reliable operations while helping to ensure both pools continue to exceed regulatory requirements into the future.
