🔬Year 9 Science Excursion!🔬

Lalor Secondary College Year 9 High Potential students stepped into the world of science at the Vitamin C Analysis workshop held at the Knox Innovation Opportunity and Sustainability Centre (KIOSC). Students were immersed in a hands-on investigation that brought classroom chemistry to life.

Using titration techniques, students analysed apple and orange juice products to determine their citric acid levels and explore how shelf life influences the use of natural and synthetic preservatives. Through their own testing, students discovered that juices with longer shelf lives often contain higher levels of citric acid, creating an acidic environment that helps prevent the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. Freshly squeezed juices, on the other hand, were found to contain lower levels of citric acid and no added preservatives.

The experience was made even more memorable through opportunities for students to experiment, collaborate, and draw conclusions from the data they collected themselves. Students enjoyed working with real laboratory equipment and seeing how chemistry connects directly to food safety and everyday consumer choices. The workshop encouraged curiosity, discussion, and critical thinking, leaving students inspired and eager to further explore the world of STEAM.

This opportunity was part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, which provides extension opportunities for high-ability students in Victorian Government schools.

Well done to our Year 9 High Potential students!

💻Cyber Security Excursion💻

On Thursday 14 May, our Year 7 and 8 High Potential classes had the exciting opportunity to participate in the Cretaceous Cove – Quantum Victoria Cyber Security Escape Room Experience. Students from Lalor Secondary College and Taylors Lakes Secondary College were mixed into collaborative teams, giving them the chance to work with a variety of peers while tackling a range of challenging brain teasers together.

The tabletop escape room experience featured three different workshops: Password Panic, Sneaky Ciphers, and Fishy Phishing. Using digital devices and a series of clues, students worked against the clock to crack passwords, solve problems, and “escape” each room before time ran out.

Each challenge required students to apply a range of skills including mathematics, critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and time management. The activities were highly engaging and certainly not easy, making it even more impressive that several groups successfully completed all three escape rooms and avoided becoming dinosaur food!

Although not every team escaped all three rooms, all students showed persistence, collaboration, and enthusiasm throughout the day. It was a fantastic learning experience that challenged students’ minds and left everyone with plenty to talk about on the way home.

❗️National Sorry Day❗️

National Sorry Day is held each year on 26th May to acknowledge and remember the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families and communities which we now know as 'The Stolen Generations'.

As always to acknowledge this day, Lalor Secondary College will be holding a fundraising out-of-uniform day on Tuesday, 26th of May. Students are encouraged to wear the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and bring a gold coin donation.

All funds raised on this day will be donated to the Community Spirit Foundation, which works in partnership with First Nations peoples to support young people through education and lifelong learning opportunities.

🎨📸 Year 11 & 12 Media Excursion – Melbourne City Experience 🎬✨

On Tuesday, our Year 11 and 12 Media students enjoyed an inspiring excursion into the heart of Melbourne, exploring art, design, photography, film, and media.

The day began at Melbourne Town Hall, where students visited the powerful Viva Gibb exhibition. The collection showcased street portrait photography capturing neighbours and local communities across Melbourne’s inner North and North West from the early 1970s through to the early 1990s.

Students then visited ACMI to explore The Story of the Moving Image exhibition, discovering the fascinating world of film, television, videogames, and digital culture through a range of interactive displays and exhibits.

After lunch, students attended Top Screen, a showcase of the highest-achieving Year 12 VCE Media films from last year. This gave students valuable insight into creative storytelling and the high standard of work produced in VCE Media.

It was a fantastic day filled with creativity, inspiration, and real-world learning experiences for our students! 🌟

Our Year 11 and 12 VCD students recently had the exciting opportunity to attend the Top Designs exhibition! 🎨✨

This inspiring excursion gave students a chance to explore outstanding folio work and final pieces from some of Victoria’s most talented VCE Visual Communication Design students. From innovative concepts to beautifully executed designs, the exhibition offered plenty of creative inspiration and insight into what can be achieved through dedication and imagination.

It was a fantastic learning experience that encouraged our students to think outside the box, refine their own creative ideas, and gain a deeper understanding of the design process.

We are so proud of our students for the way they engaged with the experience and represented our school so beautifully!
