Introducing 'Riva' the bare nose wombat. I don't usually post this early into an animal coming into care, but her story is one to be told.
She was found by a kind truckie who took the time to notice a small bundle rolled up and not moving in the middle of the road. He stopped and picked up this little one.
Riva had lost her mum and based on her overall condition she has been fending for herself for a while. She is thin, depressed and very listless. She is that weak she hasn't even put up a fight when l placed a teat in her mouth. She is taking her bottles and today is the most response l have had from her. She is slowly opening her eyes and responding to the ear scratches l have been giving her. She is still very sleepy, but slightly more responsive now.
These wombat joeys are not as tough and resilient as we like to think. They easily die of stress and without the nurturing and protection of their mothers they are doomed at this age.
Still a long way to go for my girl Riva, but each day is a bonus and a step closer to recovery. Please cross your fingers for this little one.
