Councillor, Hobsons Bay City Council, Wetlands Ward - Altona Meadows, Laverton & Seabrook.

As many of you know, I’ve decided not to stand again at the recent Local Government elections. It’s been such a privilege to represent our city, both as Mayor and Councillor representing Altona Meadows, Laverton and Seabrook.

We now have a little fella in tow, and with a big day job, I’m keen to spend more time with him and my much better half Sar. I have given my all, had a ball, and am proud of all we’ve achieved.

For too long, the Western end of our city has been overlooked - but that’s started to change. There’s been significant investments in parks and sporting facilities as well as the Altona Meadows library. We planted tens of thousands semi-advanced trees, drove foot traffic to trading strips and made progress on increasing affordable housing, improving mental health services and preventing gambling harm. Seeing more than 800 young people connect with employers at our first Pathways to Work Expo was a real highlight. Most importantly, when people have got in touch often times facing adversity, I’ve done my very best to represent them fighting for a fair go.

Nothing progresses without all shoulders to the wheel - a massive thanks to so many people I’ve worked with over the journey to deliver for our community. I’ve loved working with so many passionate people who chip in to make our community a great place to live. See comments for a letter I sent to all voters in Wetlands Ward a couple of months ago.

Thanks for all your support, and lovely messages over the last few weeks. It’s meant a lot. Go well and look forward to connecting with many of you before too long ❤️

Part of my Mayoral program included hosting Hobsons Bay’s first Youth Employment and Engagement Fair – helping people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities find their way into work. Over 800 people attended including students from seven local schools, young adults exploring pathways to work and exhibitor staff.

Thanks to partners the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation and support provided by Workforce Australia, 75 exhibitors descended on Grazeland to offer services and mentorship, provide resume support, and promote opportunities available in the west.

To get a start in the labour market, you need a start and too many people aren’t getting access to opportunities that would allow them to reach their full potential.

Flat stick this morning meeting with residents at Altona library for chat with Matt.

Laurie was keen to chat about a number of spots where litter is consistently a problem. We worked up a plan which will hopefully help make some progress.

I’m holding these open community sessions regularly - details at the link below. No need to make an appointment, just turn up and chat with Matt.

Today was huge - we welcomed over 700 people for the first Hobsons Bay Pathways To Work expo at Grazeland.

Work is so fundamental and I want to be in a community where we all have an equal shot at finding a decent job. It was awesome to connect with so many young people finding their way into work and connecting with potential employers.

Massive thanks to our host and radio presenter Lewis Hobba, the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation, Workforce Australia, over 70 exhibitors, the incredible team at Council who brought this idea to life, and all those who joined us.

Happy Friday! ☀️

The number of people using the new play space at Bruce Comben Reserve, designed in partnership with the Bunurong Land Council and the Friends of Skeleton Creek, is testament to the value of council’s investments in parks.

Council’s budget for 2024-25 includes more than $15 million for parks, open space and streetscapes – up by almost 40 per cent relative to council’s budgets over the past five years.
