Farming Together Program The Farming Together team is based at Southern Cross University in Lismore, NSW. Contact us - we'd love to hear from you.

We connect farmers, researchers, educators, businesses, communities, and government to deliver innovative solutions for climate resilience and best practice agriculture. We incorporate the team from the Lismore Node of the Southern Queensland and Northern NSW (SQNNSW) Innovation Hub. We also support the work of SCU researchers and professionals, as well as local farmers, land managers, community groups, industry leaders and government representatives, to implement new projects, value-add to existing work, build connections and collaborations, provide relevant information, and communicate research and project outcomes. Our vision is to enhance the capability of existing networks to support farmers in managing resilient, functional, profitable and biodiverse landscapes. We want to help farmers and their communities build knowledge and skills that will help them adapt to a changing climate. Knowledge Broker, Amanda Scott: [email protected]

What does regenerative agriculture mean to you?

Southern Cross University wants to hear from grain growers across Australia.

Take the anonymous 5-minute survey and help researchers better understand the practices, benefits and challenges associated with regenerative agriculture. Your input will help develop a practical definition that reflects the realities of grain growing.

SCU project lead, Professor Terry Rose, says it's critical to hear from growers.

“They are the ones who are implementing and seeing the effects of different kinds of practices on their farms," he said.

Sweet potatoes, sugar cane, berries, macadamias! 🍠🌱🫐

Southern Cross University Agronomy students have been out and about on Northern Rivers farms for their two-day residential, led by Associate Professor Mick Rose, and supported by Professor Terry Rose and Dr Jay Anderson.

They visited the Prichards at Cudgen Road Farms to see their sweet potatoes and packing shed, and then headed to Robert Quirk’s sugar cane property in the Tweed Valley to talk about the management of acid sulphate soils.

On day two, the group went to Mountain Blue, where Natalie Bell and Damien Clothier shared insights into the blackberry, raspberry, kiwiberry and blueberry operations, including breeding, propagation, growing, and marketing.

The final stop was Ross Arnett’s macadamia property. His focus is on low input, sustainable agriculture.

Huge thanks to the farmers for hosting our students! They definitely learned a lot!

With diesel costs continuing to increase, WA beef cattle farmer Nick Sissoev started to look for a practical way to reduce fuel use without replacing existing machinery.

That's how he found out about Hy-Boost Technology, and retrofitted his 12-ton tip truck with one of their systems.

Are you a market gardener, organic/regenerative grower or small-scale farmer who needs land?

A landholder in the Corndale region in Northern NSW is looking for someone to establish a productive market garden on a two-acre site.

Originally a chemical-free custard apple orchard in the 1980s, the property is now a diverse syntropic system incorporating native trees and koala corridors. Existing plants include garlic, turmeric, ginger, mulberry, pomegranate, finger lime, cassava, figs, guava, loquat, bananas, red papaya, tulsi, citrus trees, and mature custard apple trees.

The property has access to good-quality bore water and potential shared access to a five-bay shed with power and plumbing. A furnished studio may also provide an option for someone wishing to live on the property.

Emily says: "We are open to exploring a range of arrangements, including lease, land share, share farming or another mutually beneficial model, and are particularly interested in connecting with someone who shares a passion for regenerative, organic and sustainable food production."

"We need to re-equip ourselves to manufacture the fertilisers that we need for the security of food production in this country. I was not frightened to look outside the square."

And that's how Hugh Mackinnon, a berry grower from Tasmania, got involved in trialling a new system from PlasmaLeap Technologies.

It uses green electricity to create a lightning-like plasma that activates nitrogen molecules to produce nitrate-based fertilisers with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.
