Future Jobs and Investment legislation a critical step for greater Lithgow

Council has welcomed the passage of the NSW Government's Future Jobs and Investment Bill. It is an important step towards supporting our community as we navigate the energy change and prepare for future employment and investment opportunities.
The Bill establishes the Future Jobs and Investment Authority, a dedicated framework and funding mechanism to support regions affected by changes in demand for coal and coal-fired power generation.

Lithgow has long advocated for a coordinated and properly resourced approach to supporting communities experiencing structural economic change.

“The passing of this legislation is a significant milestone and recognition that coal-producing regions such as Lithgow require long-term support to manage future jobs, investment and prosperity,” Mayor Coleman said.

Council particularly welcomes provisions requiring the Authority to consult local councils when preparing Local Economic Structural Adjustment Plans and the requirement for workforce plans for coal mines and coal-fired power stations before final closure occurs.
This creates an important opportunity for Lithgow to deliver the actions developed in our Lithgow Emerging Economy Plan - LEEP including, workforce transition planning and other economic development initiatives into the State Government's framework.

Council has a detailed understanding of their communities, industries and workforce challenges, and it is important that local knowledge informs future planning and investment decisions.

“For communities like Lithgow, the impacts of transition are often felt well before final closure through changing operations, reductions in contractor activity, shifting investment decisions and supply chain impacts. We will continue to advocate for these powers to be used early so workers, businesses and families have sufficient time to prepare and respond.”

Council also welcomes the commitment to establish the Central West Local Division which Mayor Coleman strongly encourages the office to be located in Lithgow.

“Council looks forward to partnering with the NSW Government, industry, workers, educational institutions and community stakeholders to ensure Lithgow is well positioned to seize emerging opportunities and build a resilient local economy.”

Local Area Traffic Management Plans

Council is developing Local Area Traffic Managements Plans (LATMP) to help make areas safer, more accessible and better prepared for the future. The plans aim to improve road safety, enhancing walking and cycling connections, and ensure the local transport network meets the needs and expectations of the community as it grows.

We are inviting community feedback on the following LATMPs:

Vale of Clwydd Precinct from Hartley Valley Road to Woolnough/Berry Street

Railway Parade Precinct from Tank Street to Sandford Avenue

Eskbank Precinct from Cook Street to Maple Crescent and Main Street to Pau/Hill Street.

How can I have a say?

Community Consultation Sessions will be held tomorrow Wednesday 21 October 2026 in the Lecture Hall, Charles Hoskins Building, Bridge Street, Lithgow

Eskbank Precinct between 5.00pm and 6.00pm.
Railway Parade Precinct between 6.15pm and 7.15pm
Vale of Clwydd Precinct between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

The sessions will consist of a short presentation by the Consultants on why the work is being done, what they've been collecting data on, and then provide an opportunity for the community to bring forward their concerns and discuss some possible solutions that the Consultants can take away and investigate and include in the draft report. Or alternatively you can make a submission online.

Notice of behalf of Transport for NSW - Changed Traffic Conditions in Lithgow from Sunday 18 October

Transport for NSW is working to improve Main Street, Lithgow Street, Mort Street and Chifley Road whilst Victoria Pass is closed for urgent road repair work.

What work are we doing?
We will be locating utility services in preparation for upcoming asphalt work.

When and where we'll be working
Work will be carried out on Main Street, Lithgow Street, Mort Street and Chifley Road between James Street and Hartley Valley Road. We have included a map to show the location of work.

The following roads will be closed to general traffic, with access maintained for residents only: Clywdd Street, King Street, High Street, Eddy Street, Knight Street, Cook Street, Waratah Lane, Lett Street and Hassan Street.

Works will be carried out from Sunday 18 October between 8pm and 5am. Work is expected to take three nights to complete, weather permitting.

We will let you know in advance if we need to do any work outside these hours.

What will this mean for you?
You may notice:

• workers and vehicles

• traffic controllers and signage

• noise from machinery and equipment.

Traffic impacts
For the safety of workers and motorists, a number of traffic changes will be in place:

• reduced speed limit to 40km/h

• single lane closures and stop/slow traffic control

• intermittent stopping.

All road users are advised to follow the directions of signs and traffic control and slow down on approach.

These road maintenance works are likely to cause additional delays of up to 5 minutes in town.

For motorists using the Great Western Highway detour via Darling Causeway and Chifley Road during work hours, we advise you to allow an extra 50 minutes to travel through the detour and traffic control while work is underway at locations on Chifley Road and Darling Causeway.

For more information about this work, call 132 701, or visit https://www.livetraffic.com/incident-details/269920 or download the Live Traffic NSW app.

To receive updates direct to your phone, search 'Chifley Rd,, Lithgow' in the Live Traffic NSW app, select the incident and click 'Follow'.

We understand that this work will generate some inconvenience, and we thank you for your patience.
