🌧️ LORNE RIVER SYSTEM UPDATE

Lorne SES is keeping a close eye on the river system and local waterways as we experience ongoing rainfall across the area.

With further rain expected, river and creek levels can rise quickly, and conditions around waterways may change with little warning.

⚠️ Please take care around rivers, creeks and low-lying areas.
Never enter floodwater on foot or by vehicle, and please don’t put yourself or others at risk to check water levels.

We encourage everyone to keep up to date with the latest information through VicEmergency and the Bureau of Meteorology, particularly if you live, work or are visiting near waterways.

Our volunteers are continuing to monitor conditions and will provide further updates if required.

Please stay safe, Lorne. đź’™

Stay informed: bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/

Issued at: 11:00 am on Friday, 2 October 2026

Where:
For people in West and South Gippsland and parts of South West, Central and East Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Locations which may be affected include Traralgon, Bairnsdale, Sale, Warragul, Mt Baw Baw and Morwell.

When:
From early Saturday morning.

Situation:
A low pressure system is expected to linger over eastern parts of the state during Saturday, resulting in persistent southeasterly winds and moderate to heavy falls through parts of Gippsland, and the Otways.

Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is forecast to develop from early Saturday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 20 and 35 mm are likely, with isolated totals up to 50 mm possible.

24-hour rainfall totals: For the Otways between 50 and 80 mm are likely, with isolated falls up to 150 mm possible about elevated parts. For Gippsland between 40 and 60 mm are likely, with isolated falls up to 110 mm possible about elevated parts.

Conditions are expected to ease during Sunday morning as the low pressure system moves into the Tasman Sea.

What you should do:

The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

Check bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Friday.

NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT - COLD, WINDY AND CHALLENGING LATE AFTERNOON CALL OUT

Lorne SES Unit was despatched to a significant tree limb, luckily only slightly resting on a house structure on Erskine Falls Road. A combination of pole saw, electric chainsaw, petrol chainsaw, winch and sheer man power enabled the removal of the tree. Thank you to the team for turning out in the wild weather.

Since yesterday morning the unit has attended to four tree jobs, two of which have been in the Lorne township.
