Debating news!

What an incredible achievement for our debaters
Both our MSHS Junior Team and one of our Intermediate Teams have won their heats and secured a place in the Sunshine Coast Schools Debating Grand Final! πŸ€―πŸ‘

To put this into perspective
πŸ”Ή 60 teams competed
πŸ”Ή Schools travelled from as far as Caboolture and Gympie
πŸ”Ή MSHS was one of only three state schools in the competition
πŸ”Ή Across the three Grand Final divisions (Junior, Intermediate and Senior), MSHS is the only school with two teams still in contention!

We are so proud of our students for their hard work, dedication and outstanding performances throughout the competition

Last Tuesday we hosted our annual Mental Health Expo as part of Queensland Mental Health Week
With 8 of our local services attending our school - MSHS students had the opportunity to meet these support services in person.
Events like these continue to reduce barriers for our students to engage with key local services in a time of need. ☺️

Reading in Humanities πŸ›οΈπŸ“–

In Humanities, students read to investigate people, places, events and ideas - and to make sense of the world around them.

They work with many different types of texts, including historical sources, maps, photographs, statistics, news articles and different perspectives.
As they read, students learn to ask:

πŸ”Ž Who created this and why?
πŸ•°οΈ What was happening at the time?
πŸ’¬ Whose perspective is represented?
πŸ“œ What evidence does it provide?
🧠 How useful and reliable is the information?

Reading in Humanities encourages students to look beyond the information in front of them - examining evidence, considering perspectives and developing informed conclusions.

These skills help students understand the past, investigate the present and think critically about the world around them.

πŸ‘£ Connecting to Country 🌿
Yesterday, our First Nations students participate in a meaningful excursion to strengthen their connection to local Gubbi Gubbi country and gain a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of our region.

Led by respected Elder's Mack Muckan and Brent Miller from Undumbi Culture, students visited sacred local sites and learned about the stories, history and cultural importance of the land. The experience helped build stronger connections between Maroochydore State High School and our local area while fostering pride, understanding and respect for Country.

πŸ’A big thank you to Elder's Mack and Brent for sharing their knowledge and guiding our students on this valuable experience.
