Daniel’s story and legacy
For anyone who may be unfamiliar with the significance of this day, Daniel Morcombe was a 13-year-old boy who lived with his parents and brothers in Palmwoods on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
On Sunday, 7 December 2003, Daniel went missing while waiting for a bus to travel to a local shopping centre to buy Christmas presents for his family. He was last seen at approximately 2:10 pm, wearing a red T-shirt. Daniel was abducted and murdered, and despite years of searching and an extensive police investigation, his remains were not found until 2011.
In the wake of their devastating loss, Daniel’s parents, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, established the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to give back to the community that had supported their family and to help protect other children.
Today, the Foundation is a leading Australian child safety organisation, providing education and resources to help children stay safe and empowering adults to play an active role in protecting them.
Daniel’s legacy has helped shape child safety education across Australia. The red T-shirt he was wearing when he went missing has become a symbol of child safety awareness, with thousands of Australians wearing red each year on the last Friday in October to mark Day for Daniel.
Ultimately, Day for Daniel is about more than wearing red or participating in an activity. It is an opportunity to reinforce the importance of listening to children, recognising their concerns, teaching them that their voices matter and ensuring they know which trusted adults they can turn to for help.
Thank you all for your ongoing commitment to keeping our students safe and for supporting this important day.

Information and resources have already been shared with families online. If you could continue to remind families throughout the week, that would be greatly appreciated.
