Victoria’s multicultural groups and communities have welcomed the creation of Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria, which is a new agency aimed at giving diverse communities a stronger voice in government.

The government says the new agency will ensure diverse communities have an independent voice in government to influence policies and programs.

Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria will support and advise government departments and agencies including health and emergency services and it will commence operations on 1 October 2026.

Today, on Australian Citizenship Day, we celebrate a record number of new citizens proudly calling Australia home.

The milestone comes as the data shows more than 6.2 million people have become Australian citizens since citizenship was introduced in 1949.

This year’s record number of new citizens is a reminder of Australia’s diversity. Across the country, people from all walks of life are choosing to make Australia their permanent home, enriching our society through their skills, experiences, cultures and contributions.

Two of the new citizens, Khojista Hosaini and Yaser Joyan, who both received their citizenship certificates at civic ceremonies, say citizenship is an important a step in their life journeys.

From Refugee Journey to Building a Legacy

At our third Stories of Us session, we welcomed Tammy Nguyen, CEO and head of Museum Operations at the Vietnamese Museum Australia.

In conversation with AMES Chief of Strategy, Innovation and Partnership, Praveen Reddy, Tammy shared her family's journey from Vietnam to Australia and reflected on growing up between cultures. Praveen also acknowledged Tammy's recognition by her peers as one of the Williamson Community Leadership Program's valedictorians in 2025 - a program run by Leadership Victoria.

As a child, Tammy wanted to fit in, choosing Vegemite sandwiches over fried rice and preferring to be seen as Australian. As an adult, she has come to embrace both her Vietnamese and Australian identities, recognising the strength that comes from her lived experience.

Tammy also spoke about the impact of refugee experiences across generations and the vision behind the Vietnamese Museum Australia, which will preserve refugee stories and celebrate 50 years of Vietnamese Australian contributions.

One message stood out: curiosity is more important than having all the answers.

Ahead of the museum's opening on 17 October, Tammy hopes it will be a place that honours Vietnamese Australian stories while inspiring multicultural communities across Australia.

Thank you, Tammy, for sharing your story and for reminding us that cultural diversity is one of Australia's greatest strengths.

What kind of mental health future are we creating?

Beyond Blue has recently released 'The Future We Choose', a new strategic foresight report developed with CSIRO exploring how Australia's mental health landscape could evolve over the next decade.

The report makes a simple but powerful point: the future is not fixed. The choices we make today around prevention, community connection, trusted technology and access to support will help shape our future mental health and wellbeing.
