In our rapidly changing environment, the importance of research and of continuous improvement in emergency management has never been clearer.

The challenges our sector and communities face demand more than reactive measures. They call for significant insight, innovation, and adaptability.

The week's Emergency Management Conference provided an opportunity to bring the particularly quiet hero of sector- and practitioner-led emergency management research to the fore.

Our thanks to Ambulance Victoria, Bass Coast Shire Council, CFA (Country Fire Authority), Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Life Saving Victoria, Mornington Peninsula Shire and Victorian Department of Health for showcasing your research, and fostering a culture of shared learning and continuous improvement.

Evaluating and learning from current practices is needed to respond to the challenges of increasing severity, frequency and complexity of emergencies.

IGEM’s Assurance and Continuous Improvement Priorities 2025-2029 reflect system-wide challenges which continue to impact Victorians before, during and after emergencies.

Four priorities will guide IGEM’s system-wide reviews over the next 5 years:
• Training and exercising
• Community preparedness
• Recovery
• Managing consequences

This approach ensures we apply a strategic lens to tailor our assurance and continuous improvement methods.
