Do you wake up with a sore jaw, a tension headache, or teeth that feel tired before the day has even started?
It could be bruxism, which means clenching or grinding your teeth. It often happens during sleep, so many people don't know they're doing it.
Over time, grinding can put extra strain on your teeth, your jaw muscles and your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the joint just in front of each ear. Signs to watch for include:
• Jaw stiffness, tiredness or pain when chewing
• Tension headaches or facial pain
• Clicking, popping or a jaw that catches or locks
• Earache-like pain, or tension in your neck and shoulders
• Worn, chipped or sensitive teeth, or fillings that keep breaking
Not all jaw pain comes from grinding, so a proper assessment matters. Grinding can cause permanent wear if it isn't managed, so it's worth getting checked early.
