North East Link 6.5km tunnels linking Melbourne's freeway network. Our social media channels are monitored 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (not including public holidays).

Changing it up 🧩

The future Bulleen Road interchange has seen huge progress this year as three mega structures have been lifted into place over the Eastern Freeway.

With all 188 beams now in place to support these elevated ramps, watch and learn how they’ll connect an upgraded Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels from 2028.

All beams in on the M80's longest bridge đź“Ź

The final 12 Super-T beams have been installed on the flyover bridge that will take drivers from Diamond Creek onto the M80 Ring Road towards Altona.

The beams weigh around 97 tonnes each, are 40 metres long and were lifted into place using two 800-tonne cranes.

With beam installation out of the way, crews can focus on finishing works like deck pours, guard rail installation, and then move onto pavement works as the bridge gets closer to opening early next year.

Weekend well spent đź‘·

The October weekend's closure of the Eastern Freeway saw big progress from Hoddle Street to Tram Road.

During the closure teams successfully:

Laid 16,000 tonnes of asphalt 🛣️

Installed smart traffic management cables to help improve safety and traffic flow along freeway once the project is completed 🚥

Completed upgrades to drainage and existing lighting between Hoddle Street and Burke Road đź’ˇ

The asphalt laid over the weekend will prepare the road surface for an additional layer that'll be added before the project is completed in 2028.

Thank you to the locals and drivers for their patience while we carried out these important upgrades.

Gearing up for gantry removal đźš›

With all TBM parts now removed from the box in Bulleen, locals will see the large, 550 tonne green gantry crane start to come down in the coming months.

Starting on the project late 2023 in Watsonia, it helped lift the TBM pieces into place for tunnelling and has lifted 16,000 tonne of TBM parts during it’s time on the project 🤯

While it is farewell for this mean green lifting machine - it will be reused on other projects in the future.

Using tech to keep people moving đźš´

As Eastern Freeway widening works between Tram to Springvale Road required a section of walking and cycling path through Eram Park, the team used an Australian first solution to keep the community moving in a safe way.

Instead of building a deck over a deep excavation beside live traffic they used truss beams from Pilosio to make a two span bridge with temporary handrails. The beams are made from aluminium meaning they’re lightweight, adaptable, strong and optimal in all weather conditions.

The new bridge extension is now in place while Eastern Freeway Upgrade widening works continue.

Raising the roof at Lower Plenty Road 🎉

Strong progress is being made at our Lower Plenty Road site with 252 roof planks installed over both tunnels since June and nearly all 431planks are expected to be in by the end of 2026.

Upon completion in 2028 this area will be transformed into Borlase Reserve, creating a new nature and habitat corridor featuring wetlands, walking paths, playgrounds and open community spaces.

At around 67 metres long and weighing nearly 100 tonne, it only made this milestone more impressive.

Over the past two weeks, crews have been busy lifting beams into place over Bulleen Road.

These beams form part of the future 2 hectare Yarra Link green bridge, which will connect Koonung Creek Trail to Bulleen Park.

Details about this weekend’s Eastern Freeway closure ℹ️

The Eastern Freeway will be closed between Chandler Highway and Tram Road from 10pm, Friday 16 October to 5am, Monday 19 October, with lane closures in place between Hoddle Street and Chandler Highway.

During this closure crews are:
Laying around 6,500 tonnes of asphalt
Realigning lanes and moving traffic barriers to open new work areas between Burke and Elgar roads
Building new noise walls between Bulleen and Elgar roads
Installing new on-road technology and freeway light poles between Chandler Highway and Burke Road.
