The Victorian Electoral Commission is an independent and impartial statutory authority established under Victoria's Electoral Act 2002. We conduct Victorian State elections, local council elections, certain statutory elections, and commercial and community elections. We also conduct boundary reviews, maintain the Victorian electoral enrolment register, conduct electoral research, provide education services and work to engage all Victorians who are entitled to vote in the democratic process.

Today is the last day to return your ballot pack for the Whittlesea City Council, Thomastown Ward by-election.

Your completed ballot pack must be in the mail or hand-delivered to the election office located at 109 Yale Drive, Epping by 6 pm to be counted.

If you haven’t received your ballot pack, you can collect a replacement from the election office.

Electoral Commissioner Sven Bluemmel recently returned the writ for the Nepean District by-election.

A writ is a formal legal document that starts an election and then confirms the result.

When the writ is returned, the election process is officially complete.

It’s triplets! There are 3 local council by-elections happening in July:
• City of Kingston, Melaleuca Ward
• Latrobe City Council, Morwell River Ward
• Wyndham City Council, Heathdale Ward

Each election will be conducted by post.
📅 To have your say, enrol or update your details by 4 pm Wednesday 20 May.

State-enrolled voters:
• Australian citizens
• 18 years or older on election day
• Live in the council area (for at least one month).

Not state-enrolled in the area?
If you are 18 or older on election day, you may be able to vote as a council-enrolled voter if you:
• pay rates for a property in the area that you own or occupy (including as a tenant)
• are a director or company secretary of a corporation that pays rates for a property in the area that it owns or occupies (and are nominated by that corporation).
Contact your council to check or apply for council enrolment.

✉️ Voting by postal vote
If you’re voting by post, put your ballot pack in the mail by 6 pm today. We must receive your completed postal vote by 6pm on Friday 8 May for it to be counted. You can also take your ballot pack to a voting centre today.

Delivering a by-election involves detailed planning and coordinated work across many teams.

📄 15,000 candidate leaflets printed
📬 10,533 ballot packs sent
📮 8,572 votes received
🎩 8,270 formal votes.

📅 Early voting for the Nepean District by-election begins Wednesday 22 April.

Voting centres will be open on ANZAC Day (Saturday 25 April), from 1 – 8 pm.

Here’s how to vote correctly:
1️⃣ put a 1 in the box next to your most preferred candidate
2️⃣ number ALL the remaining boxes in the order of your choice
3️⃣ use each number only once.
