Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency ARPANSA is the Australian Government's primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety.

ARPANSA is the independent regulator of Commonwealth entities that use or produce radiation. ARPANSA provides advice and services to the Australian community on radiation protection, nuclear safety, security, and medical exposures to radiation. The agency also undertakes internationally recognised research and promotes both national uniformity and the implementation of international best practice. From our scientists to the world’s first scientists, we respectfully acknowledge Traditional Owners and First Nations communities and their rich cultures. Even if you're only popping out for a moment to water the garden or walk the dog, we've entered the time of year where daily sun protection is a must - even if it's not sunny!

This weekend, all locations across Australia are expected to be rated 3 or above on the UV Index, which means sun protection is recommended. In fact, predictions are for high, very high and extreme UV which means more regular sun protection is needed.

Extreme UV: Brisbane, Alice Springs, Emerald, Townsville, Darwin
Very high UV: Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney
High UV: Hobart

While your furry friends are receiving the best care, who ensures veterinary teams are protected from workplace hazards?

When you think about radiation protection, veterinary care might not be the first profession that comes to mind. But like humans, pets can benefit from nuclear medicine and diagnostic tools that use radiation, including X-rays and CT scans.

During Safe Work Australia National Safe Work Month, we're highlighting resources to support radiation safety of workers in a range of professions - from arborists to veterinarians.

Medical imaging in veterinary practices poses unique radiation protection challenges. If animals have swallowed something they shouldn't have (tennis balls are very tempting!), are injured or in pain - X-ray or CT imaging can help determine the cause and guide appropriate treatment.

Imaging is essential to ensuring animals receive the best care, but their wide variety of shapes, sizes and situations make occupational exposure more complex.

Most veterinary workers will receive annual doses below the public limit of 1 mSv and many will receive no occupational dose, but radiation management is important to maintain a safe work environment.

On this day in science history, we celebrate the birth of Sir James Chadwick (1891-1974), the British physicist who discovered the neutron in 1932. His breakthrough transformed our understanding of the atom and helped shape the development of nuclear science and technology. This discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1935 and paved the way for nuclear energy and atomic research.

Chadwick's discovery of neutrons, and the ability to split them, lead to the fission of uranium 235 and towards the creation of the atomic bomb.

Today we acknowledge his contribution to the building blocks of matter.

The UV (ultraviolet) might change across Australia this weekend depending on where you are, but one message stays the same: check your skin regularly.

Melanoma often appears as a new spot or a spot that is changing in size, shape or colour. Cancer Council Australia recommends getting to know your skin and looking out for the ABCD and EFG signs of melanoma: Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Elevated, Firm, and Growing.

Take a few minutes this weekend to check your skin. If you notice anything new or changing, make an appointment with your doctor.

Do you work outdoors?

Sun protection is an important part of ensuring outdoor workers are safe at work.

We've developed fact sheets for a range of occupations that use or are exposed to radiation - including ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

Outdoor workers experience some of the highest exposures to solar UV throughout their working lives, especially in construction, agricultural and manufacturing industries, where the majority of work is undertaken outdoors. In some jobs, there are also potential workplace UV exposures from artificial sources including welding, germicidal lamps and high intensity lighting.

Outdoor workers are typically exposed to 5 to 10 times more UV than indoor workers, so sun protection is critical to reduce the risk of skin and eye damage or skin cancer.

Whether you're a construction worker, lifeguard, postie, farmer or school crossing guard - there are tools available to protect you from harmful exposure.

Do you need to wear a radiation dosimeter as part of your work?

The Australian National Radiation Dose Register (ANRDR) has expanded to capture the dose history of approximately 75,000 occupationally exposed workers, while average and maximum recorded worker doses declined and remained well below the annual occupational limit.

We’ve published the 2025 Australian National Radiation Dose Register (ANRDR) report.

ARPANSA maintains the ANRDR, which houses data from the uranium and mineral sands industries, as well as from government organisations, research institutions, and certain veterinary and medical practices.

The ANRDR stores radiation dose histories of occupationally exposed workers, allowing them access to their long-term dose records even after changing employers.

In this 2025 report, 84% of workers received a dose less than 1 mSv and 99% received a dose less than 3 mSv. These values are well below the occupational exposure limit of 20 mSv per year.

Overall, the latest report shows that current workplace exposures are very low and comparable with the risks of exposure from background and medical radiation exposure.

Most of Australia has sprung forward with daylight savings, which means more daylight at the end of the day and more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Our Friday Forecast shows mostly high to extreme UV (ultraviolet) levels across Australia.

From the southern cities of Hobart and Melbourne (UV 7, High) to Sydney on the east coast (UV 8, Very High), across to Perth in the west (UV 9, Very High), and right up to Darwin in the tropical north (UV 11, Extreme), UV radiation is reaching harmful levels.

Everyone deserves to be safe at work.

During October, we're celebrating National Safe Work Month 2026 with the theme 'Safe work is for life' - highlighting the importance of work health and safety (WHS) to protect workers now and into the future.

As a health authority and radiation safety regulator, safety is at the heart of everything we do. We've created a suite of occupational fact sheets for people and businesses that work with radiation and will share information about protection for workers throughout October.

Safe Work Australia has compiled a range resources for businesses, schools and individuals to engage with with 4 themes to be explored throughout October.

Week 1: For life - why WHS matters
Week 2: For health - what WHS protects
Week 3: For future - the long-term impact
Week 4: For all - action across all workplaces

We encourage you to reflect on what safety at work means to you. We can all contribute to 'Safe work for life'.
