ARPANSA is the Australian Government's primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety.

ARPANSA is the independent regulator of Commonwealth entities that use or produce radiation. ARPANSA provides advice and services to the Australian community on radiation protection, nuclear safety, security, and medical exposures to radiation. The agency also undertakes internationally recognised research and promotes both national uniformity and the implementation of international best practice.

Do you check the label to see how much UV protection your sunglasses provide?

We have an ultraviolet radiation laboratory (pictured) that tests sunglasses, as well as clothes, shade fabrics plus other materials to determine a protection factor rating so that customers can be confident of their sun protective properties.

Businesses and individuals can engage this service. You can tell if a company has had their product independently certified and tested by seeing if there is an ARPANSA label on their product or on promotional material.

Kylie Minogue once sang 'what do I have to do, to get the message through?' In the new Netflix doco series, Kylie, Australia's favourite pop star talks about her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2005.

Within two weeks of that news, the number of bookings for mammographs had risen by 40% in four Australian states.

Kylie's experience helps to humanise the science that it is crucial for cancer patients and raise awareness of mammography which uses X-rays as a screening tool to detect early signs of breast cancer.

In 2024, ARPANSA contributed to an international report which that found that the risk of developing a second primary cancer due to radiotherapy is very low.
