A reflection on partnership, shared values and the bipartisan support that continues to strengthen the relationship between Victoria and Israel.

A significant announcement at last night’s Parliamentary Cocktails: Victoria will pursue a new formal partnership with some of Israel’s leading medical institutions.

Last night, Zionism Victoria, the Zionist Federation of Australia, the JCCV and the ECAJ proudly hosted the annual Parliamentary Cocktails reception, celebrating the 78th anniversary of Israel’s independence.

We were honoured to welcome the Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Jacinta Allan MP, who offered a toast to the State of Israel and reaffirmed not only Victoria’s friendship with Israel and the Jewish community, but also her commitment to strengthening the ongoing partnerships between Victoria and Israel.

We were also pleased to be joined by the Leader of the Opposition, Jess Wilson MP, and Israel’s Ambassador to Australia, Dr Hillel Newman.

As Israel marks 78 years of independence, the evening was a powerful reflection of the strong bipartisan support for the Victorian Jewish community and the deep and enduring relationship between Victoria and Israel. Real humanitarian work happens quietly, consistently, and at scale. Staging a media spectacle in a conflict zone may attract cameras, but it does little to help the people it claims to serve.

You cannot claim to stand for human rights while excluding the rights of an entire people – the Jewish people. True humanitarianism does not pick and choose who deserves dignity, safety, and self-determination.

Antizionists are not the humanitarians they think they are.

Feels relevant to far more than just this one situation right now.
