Policing is not *just* about catching baddies for Acting Detective Sergeant Rick.
Rick sees policing as an opportunity to play a positive role in the community and support people in challenging and sometimes traumatic situations – something he finds deeply rewarding about the job.
He has applied this perspective into his role as an LGBTIQA+ Liaison Officer (LLO), which he does on top of his regular duties as a detective.
Rick has been an LLO for over 10 years, during which he’s been a resource and support both inside the organisation and the broader community.
The importance of the role of an LLO is not lost on Rick, who appreciates the importance of representation and ensuring we are proactively supporting and working with the LGBTIQA+ community.
Rick’s biggest inspiration in the rainbow community? David Bowie.
"He lived how he chose to live. If someone didn’t understand what he was about, he never let it stop him."

“Every day is different and even the small interactions can mean a lot.”
This , we highlighting one of our Police Aboriginal Liaison Officers (PALOs), Tia.
PALOs work closely with Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers (ACLOs), community groups and communities to help break down barriers with police. It’s a role grounded in trust, connection and community.
Originally from New Zealand, and with family in the job, policing was always something Tia wanted to pursue. Alongside her PALO role, she also works in a Proactive Policing Unit, focusing on building genuine relationships and helping create culturally safe and respectful interactions with police.
“As a Māori woman, I’ve always valued culture, community and looking out for people. That’s one of the reasons I was drawn to working with Aboriginal communities through the PALO role.”
For Tia, this year's theme, “All In”, is about coming together, learning from each other, celebrating culture and strengthening connections.
She encourages young Aboriginal people considering policing to back themselves:
“Back yourself and give it a go. It’s not always easy, but it’s a really rewarding path where you can make a real difference.”

A man has been arrested in Queensland this morning as part an investigation into an armed robbery and the shooting of three men at Chadstone Shopping Centre in 1994.
With help from Queensland Police Service’s Gold Coast Major Organised Crime Squad, two search warrants were executed this morning at addresses in Southport and Nerang.
A 78-year-old Southport man has been taken into custody and detectives will now apply for his extradition to Melbourne.
His arrest follows an appeal for information earlier this month after Armed Crime Squad detectives reopened the cold case investigation when new intelligence was received.

Today is National LGBTIQA+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day.
Family violence can affect anyone - and it doesn't always look the same in LGBTIQA+ relationships.
Understanding the unique ways it can present, and creating safe, inclusive spaces to talk about it, can make all the difference. When people feel seen and supported, they’re more likely to reach out for help.
We’ve created a page on our website about the forms of family violence LGBTIQA+ people may experience, along with links to speciality support services >www.police.vic.gov.au/family-violence-and-lgbtiqa-communities
If you or someone you know needs help, support is available.
In an emergency, always call Triple Zero (000).
Our goal is for everyone to feel safe and respected in their relationships and feel confident to seek support 💜
