Are You Fire Ready?
The fire danger period in Victoria is a critical period characterised by heightened risks of bushfires and grassfires. This period typically spans from October to May, although the exact timing can vary based on local weather conditions and rainfall.

Residents and visitors in Victoria are encouraged to stay informed about fire risks in their area. Understanding local fire restrictions and being prepared can help ensure safety during the fire danger period.

CFA recommends all residents in fire danger areas prepare ahead of the fire danger period by having an up to date Fire Plan and a well prepared property.

What is a Fire Plan and what should you do to prepare your property?

Upwey CFA provides a free on-site advisory service that guides you through a number of aspects you should consider with your preparations. It’s called the Property Advice Visit Service

The Property Advice Visit Service (PAVS) is an awareness-raising service delivered by our trained brigade members to residents living in homes situated in our local area.

This is a free service that typically involves a 15- 20 minute meeting at your property. You will receive publications and planning templates along with information about your local risk and preparing for fire.

For more information about what’s involved and how to book a visit delivered by Upwey CFA members, click on this link; https://upweycfa.org.au/pavs/.

Daylight Saving Time starts in Victoria Sunday 4th October 2026
Turn your clocks FORWARD 1 hour.
This is a timely reminder to test and maintain your smoke alarms.
Test:
Push the test button on an alarm with your finger or a broom handle.
If it beeps, it is working.
If it doesn't beep, you need to replace the battery or get a new smoke alarm.
Clean:
At least once a year dust your smoke alarm to remove any dust or cobwebs that can build up and stop it from working.
Battery:
Replace the 9V battery annually. Most modern smoke alarms have a 10year battery that doesn't need replacing. After 10 years replace the smoke alarm.

Spring is here and it's time to start preparing and protecting your property against a bushfire.
CFA recommends everyone in Victoria who lives near dense forest, bush, grassland or the coast needs to prepare their property.
Here are 4 key areas to consider;
1) Trim or clear trees and vegetation near the house
2) Maintain your landscaping
3) Home maintenance to protect against ember attacks
4) Burn off waste vegetation before the Fire Danger Period starts

Before you light your burn-off, ensure;
- You're following regulations or laws by CFA and your local council.
- You notify your neighbours if your activity will generate fire and smoke.
- Check the weather forecast for the day of the activity and a few days afterwards.
- You establish a gap in vegetation or fire break with no less than three metres cleared of all flammable material.
- There are enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely and effectively.

Unregistered burn-offs can cause brigades to be called out unnecessarily.

This week, our members participated in TEWT (Tactical Exercise Without Troops) training.

TEWT training helps members develop tactical planning and decision-making skills using large-scale maps and props, including fire appliances and vehicles from various agencies. Through simulated incidents, members can safely test different strategies, explore outcomes, and learn from their decisions without any real-world risk.

During the session, members worked through a range of scenarios, considering the actions, priorities, and resource placement required to effectively manage each incident. To ensure everyone could participate, two scenarios were run simultaneously on separate maps.

A big thank you to Country Fire Authority - District 13 for providing the CFA TEWT map and accessories.

We also thank Yarra Ranges Council for the loan of the Council's new large-format aerial map of the Yarra Ranges. This gave members the opportunity to plan a scenario in our local area while identifying key landmarks, roads, and features that support operational planning.

Training like this helps build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to respond effectively to incidents in our community.
