Melbourne City Mission - MCM We’re a profit-for-purpose community organisation supporting people to live their life, their way.

We’ve been around for almost as long as Melbourne itself and over the years have adapted and evolved alongside the people we work with, always responding to the changing needs of communities. Our staff are dedicated professionals, with the expertise to deliver holistic, integrated services that really make a powerful and sustainable difference to people’s lives.

Today, on World Homeless Day we join communities around the world in raising awareness about homelessness, celebrating positive outcomes and advocating for the policies and investment needed to prevent and end homelessness.

Safe and stable housing creates opportunities for people to thrive.

Rachel and her two children spent years moving between temporary places to stay. Since securing long-term social housing through support from MCM, the family has been able to move beyond daily survival and start building a brighter future.

Stories like Rachel's show why access to housing matters. It provides stability, connection and the foundation people need to pursue education, employment and community participation.

On International Day of Older Persons we celebrate the wisdom, contributions, and rich histories of our older community members. It is also an important opportunity to reflect on how we support older adults as they age, face health changes, and navigate the final stages of life.

The physical and emotional changes that come with growing older can present complex challenges for individuals, their families, and care providers. MCM's Palliative Care Aged Care team make sure that older people and their loved ones are supported in the way that matters most to them.

They understand that every life story is different. We are honoured to be able to share the stories of Carol, Margaret and Edith.

This year marks our 6-year anniversary of putting our Healing Oriented Framework into practise! But what does this mean and how does it work?

It's simple. Our Healing Oriented Framework is an ongoing commitment to support the wellbeing of the people we work with. It’s about making sure our services are inclusive and focused on ongoing safety. It puts each person, their family, and their community first, (while recognising that healing is an ongoing process!)

That means:
1. We put people first. Using their knowledge and first-hand experiences to shape how we design, deliver and run our programs
2. Every voice matters. Everyone who comes to MCM is seen, heard, and valued
3. We meet people where they are, learning and understanding their stories, life experiences, and what they might need from us
4. Building strong relationships, cultural connection, and community support.

Our focus is on creating safe spaces and that builds a sense of belonging and community. Everyone is welcome here.

Last month, MCM joined young people with lived experience at Parliament House, where they shared their perspectives and priorities, outlined in our 2026 Victorian State Election Platform, Safe Homes, Strong Futures.

Access to safe and stable housing changes lives. More housing made for young people will create the stable foundation needed to improve well-being, while opening opportunities in education and employment.

We thank Georgie Purcell - Animal Justice Party MP for her ongoing engagement with MCM, including speaking in Parliament to advocate for 500 homes for young people experiencing homelessness and mental-ill health.

1 in 2 young people experiencing homelessness present to emergency departments for mental-ill health. With young people bouncing from hospitals back into homelessness, 500 beds will break this cycle of crisis care.

Together, we can build the housing and support needed to make sure every young person in Victoria can reach their full potential.

Therapy groups give children the space to learn and practise a whole range of skills, like sharing ideas, working collaboratively, adapting to changes and navigating challenges with our team of therapists and key workers.

That's why our Early Childhood Intervention Service (ECIS) groups are designed around children's strengths, interests and individual goals.

We know that kids learn, communicate and engage in different ways. Groups like Little Ballers are focused on building functional skills that support participation in everyday life (like school, going to the shops, spending time with family).

Rather than expecting every child to participate in the same way, we aim to understand where each child is at, build on their existing strengths and create opportunities for success.

"We can finally stop living in survival mode and start building our futures," – Ella, MCM Lived Experience Advisor.

Today, MCM Lived Experience Advisor Ella joined Home Time representatives, Homelessness Australia and sector leaders at Parliament House for the Australian Government's announcement of a new $300 million housing commitment to support young people and women escaping family violence.

For young people experiencing homelessness, a safe and stable home is about so much more than a roof overhead.

"When young people have a safe and stable home, we can finally stop living in survival mode and start building our futures. We can study, we can work, and we can have hope for what comes next. That's why this investment matters," said Ella.

This investment means more homes, more housing outcomes, and more pathways out of homelessness for young people. It will help provide the safety and stability needed to reconnect with education, employment, community and the opportunities every young person deserves.

MCM was proudly represented by MCM Head of Policy and Advocacy and Home Time spokesperson Shorna Moore and Ella as part of the Home Time campaign delegation.

As Shorna said:
"When we give a young person a safe place to live, we aren't just putting a roof over their head. We are giving them the foundation to stay in school, recover from trauma, and build a life. For the young people currently in shelters or sleeping in parks, this announcement offers real hope."

Today is an important step forward, but there is more work to do. Together, we can help ensure every young person has somewhere safe to call home.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone as two young people have signed up to the first ever long-term social housing properties dedicated specifically to young people in Gippsland history, made possible through Homes Victoria's Rapid Housing Round.

This project, delivered in partnership with MCM Housing and Quantum Support Services, will deliver seven properties in the Central Gippsland region to young people leaving care to ensure they can access safe, stable and affordable housing in their local community.

By creating local housing opportunities that support independence, community connection and long-term stability, we're helping young people transition from care successfully and building brighter futures.

Every young person deserves a safe place to call home.
