The Casey Residents and Ratepayer Association (CRRA) welcomes the election of the Waratah Ward Councilor, Stefan Koomen as Mayor and Kalora Ward Councilor, Melinda Ambros as Deputy Mayor for the City of Casey.
Cr. Koomen and Cr. Ambros were elected uncontested as Mayor and Deputy Mayor at a Special Purpose meeting of the City of Casey on Tuesday 19th November.
President of the CRRA, Brian Oates congratulated Mayor Koomen and Deputy Mayor Ambros on their election:
“On behalf of our members and committee, I would like to congratulate Cr. Koomen and Cr. Ambros on their election as Mayor and Deputy Mayor. This is a significant and momentous time for the City of Casey with the return of democratically elected representatives after being in administration for four years after the dismissal of the council in 2020.
Our residents need and deserve genuine, trustworthy leadership, acting in their best interests.
We look forward to working collaboratively with the newly Council, Mayor and Deputy Mayor on behalf of Casey residents to ensure value for money with our rates, transparency and accountability for the decisions Council make that impact our community.”

I’m told that there are some people who didn’t vote for me because I had been a Mayor in the City of Casey Council.
That was 21 years ago and 2 years later I resigned.
In2005 when I did not nominate. Casey council had become the most populated local Government area in Victoria, with 85 families moving in each week. We were for many times the fastest growing municipality in Australia, because so many people wanted to live here due to the rates being amongst the lowest in Victoria and Residents and Ratepayers being the most satisfied. Why wouldn’t you want to live in the best municipality in the then most livable City in the World.
In 2007 corruption was set in and rates sky rocketed and have increased by the maximum every year. The council of Casey spent an awful lot of ratepayers money in order to increase rates above the cap.
That’s not really working for the residents best interests.

I noticed last weekend that a candidate in Kalora Ward had decorated the traffic lights on Heatherton Road with back to back core flutes promoting themselves
A number of people had contacted me asking if that was legal I told them I understood that if the candidate had obtained a warrant and there wasn’t any interference or distraction for drivers, which was debatable in this instance.
On Monday morning I noticed that the posters had all disappeared!
It would be interested to know what caused them to have been removed? Any ideas?
The candidate doesn’t even live in Kalora Ward either.

It used to be that if a candidate felt that another candidate was the next best nomination then that person would get No2 on the preference list and so on. The people could judge how good a candidate was by the amount of 2nd preferences they got. Now that’s all over.
I explained how different it worked in the local Newspaper when I was first elected.
Now it’s gone even further down hill and people should avoid candidates with 2 or more 2nd preferences on the preference lists.
Some surround themselves with dummy candidates who have no interest in getting on Council and some will even say things like “vote 1 for me and 2 for Bob who’s a really great guy” in their statement.
This was used to no good in the Four Oaks ward in 2016. It’s not illegal but it’s a great help to unscrupulous candidates who we don’t want any more.

In Kalora Ward the majority of candidates do not live in the Ward. Those candidates who do live in the Ward are:-
ME Brian Herbert Oates
Duc Nguyen
Petrine Smulders
Fred Jover
A very diverse group!

I was recently invited to lunch with the Filipino Younger Generation seniors club in Doveton JP hall. I couldn’t stay for lunch, which looked really great, but I had to do more door knocking so that I get all of Kalora Ward visited by the date the ballot is finalised.

🚨 **One Year Anniversary of the IBAC Special Report into Operation Sandon** 🚨
The CRRA is dismayed and disappointed at the lack of action regarding the former City of Casey Councillors with adverse findings against them.
The public sentiment is clear: Residents do NOT want former Councillors from the sacked 2016-2020 term to be re-elected in the 2024 council elections.
We, the CRRA, stand with you and will continue to inform the voting population to ensure that these individuals do not return to office.
For a whole year, we've been calling for the State Government to take decisive action against those sacked Councillors implicated in Operation Sandon. At the very least, Councillors from the 2016-2020 term should be banned from standing for re-election in the upcoming October elections.
It's been 8 long years since the City of Casey last held elections. Since the explosive reports of corrupt dealings by some Councillors, the CRRA has been advocating for greater transparency and accountability of those elected officials.
Let's make our voices heard and demand a council that truly represents and serves the people of Casey! 🗳️✨
