This week, NY-based Japanese keyboardist 🔴💊🔵💊 has been holed-up in the treasure trove that is (Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, here at Fed Square) exploring their incredible collection of rare and vintage synths and electronic instruments – and making music 🤩

He’s in Melbourne for MelbJazzFest, and is performing this Saturday as part of Free Jazz at the Square 🎶 (and at Max Watts tonight!)

We caught up with bigyuki to find out what he’s been up to at MESS – and what you can expect on Saturday!

What've you got planned this Friday night, Melbs? 🎶

If you're out and about, pop by the Square on your way to a Melbourne International Jazz Festival gig for a jazz-themed open-air vinyl listening gathering, with Shio + Dem Large from Wax Museum Records 🎧

The decks will be set up at the top of the Swanston Street steps, with beanbags and deckchairs out, so you can drop by or sink in and stick around.

This event is presented as part of ROTATION – a regular program of pop-up, low-key vinyl listening gatherings throughout the Square, where everyone's invited.

ROTATION hands over the decks to local, grassroots selectors and DJs, introducing you to some of the passionate vinyl collectors, curators and tastemakers who help make up our local independent record scene.

Follow Australia’s leading First Nations-led contemporary circus company Na Djinang Circus this week, as they present a brand new moveable acrobatic work throughout Fed Square, free as part of Melbourne Fringe – 𝙊𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧.

A show in motion, 𝙊𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧 is a roving circus show tearing through the square on a portable railway track built in real time.

This modern-day hunting party weaves through crowds, laying track wherever the chase leads. Down laneways, through parks, and over tram lines, the troupe is chasing something just out of reach.

Swept up in the chaos of the chase, 𝙊𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧 waits for nobody. Keeping up is entirely your responsibility.

Lacing up for the Melbourne Marathon this weekend? Or just heading into the city? 🏃‍♀️

The Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival is on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, and there are significant road closures across the city that will affect getting to Fed Square. Our car park will also have limited access at these times:

🚗 Saturday 10 Oct: 4am–11am
🚗 Sunday 11 Oct: 3.30am–2pm

Our tip? Plan ahead, give yourself extra time and take public transport if you can 🚋

Once you’re here, cheer on the runners with us! We’ll be screening all the action on the Big Screen, with DJs spinning tunes and a merch store on the Swanston St Forecourt 🎶

Calling all blues and dub lovers 🎶

Come and hear a night of experimental dub and blues-infused sounds at The Edge.

Luritja singer Keanu Nelson, from Papunya/Warumpi in the NT, takes the stage with his evolving "dub country" sound. It's a way-out blend of deep grooves and country storytelling, and you'll hear it played live, including songs that haven't been released yet 🎧

Opening the night is Kankawa Nagarra, an 83-year-old Walmatjarri Elder and musician from Wangkatjungka, WA. Her music carries the songs of ceremony, hymns, gospel and country, all tied together by the blues. She'll be sharing brand new material on the night 🌟

Two voices, generations apart, one night of music to sink into.

Devised and curated by Joel Bray, 𝘿𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙝𝙖 / 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙚 asks something quietly radical: put down your phone, step outside, and let the people of this city surprise you.

For 𝘿𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙝𝙖 / 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙚: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙮, the benches become makeshift stages. The Joel Bray Dancers flit and stride and writhe.

The beat builds. It's time to move, Melbourne.
