Martindale Hall has 32 rooms to explore, beautiful grounds to wander and more than 140 years of history behind its doors.

If you're planning a weekend of wineries, good food and country drives, we'd love you to include a visit.

High Tea returns to Martindale Hall.

Friday 20 November & Saturday 21 November

Take your place at the dining table or in the Drawing Room and experience the Hall as it was designed to be enjoyed, with rooms prepared, tables set and guests gathered.

Enjoy a generous sweet and savoury high tea banquet, with teas from Sociatea and The Merry Wolf served throughout.

Your ticket also includes entry to Martindale Hall and our Behind Closed Doors group history talk, offering a closer look at the stories, people and life of this remarkable country house.

Martindale Hall was, quite literally, built on the sheep’s back.

In the boom years of the 1870s and 1880s, the Bowman family prospered enormously through South Australia’s pastoral industry.

By 1883, the family owned 86,000 acres of land and held another 2.4 million acres under lease.

That wealth helped fund the construction of Martindale Hall — completed in 1880 as one of the grandest country houses of its kind in South Australia.

At the time, pastoral country could be described as a place where money might be “coined by the aid of sheep”.

Walk through Martindale today and that history is still visible in the scale of the house, its rooms, furnishings and surrounding estate.

A fitting story to revisit during Clare Valley Festival of the Lamb.

Today, we try to celebrate the legacy of the grand house through events and celebrations connected to its historical past.

A little more to look for these school holidays.

Young visitors to Martindale Hall can pick up a Junior Detective Card and explore the house with a list of clues to find along the way.

A portrait. A fireplace. A bell or servant clue. Something made from metal. A pattern. And a few details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

It’s a simple way for children to slow down, look closely and discover the Hall for themselves.

Complete the challenge and children can also receive their Children's University Australasia passport stamp.

The Martindale Hall Junior Detective activity is included with general admission throughout the school holidays.
