The Australian Democrats are a grassroots political party, and we depend on the generosity of our members, volunteers and supporters to keep us going.

Campaigning is not cheap and, unlike the major parties, we don’t have enormous campaign budgets or big political machines behind us. Every contribution, whether it’s your time, your skills or a financial donation, helps us grow our presence and bring an independent, accountable voice back to Victorian politics.

If you believe in what we’re working towards, we’d love your support.

💚💛 Every donation, big or small, makes a difference.

Help us bring balance back to Victorian politics.

The horrific attack on Independent MP Dr Helen Haines has shocked and appalled us all in the Australian Democrats. This is an incredibly painful and difficult time for Helen's family and community and our deepest sympathies and solidarity is with them at this time. We wish her strength as she faces an immensely challenging recovery.

Dr Helen Haines is widely respected across the entire political spectrum for her fierce dedication, integrity, and tireless service to her community. For an elected representative to be targeted with extreme violence while serving her constituents is a profound tragedy and a direct assault on the core values of Australian democracy.

Political violence, intimidation, and hatred have absolutely no place in our society. This shocking incident serves as a critical warning that we must collectively reject toxic rhetoric and recommit to a public discourse rooted in civility, respect, and safety. Every single person deserves to be safe at work, and those who step up to serve our nation must be able to do so without fearing for their lives.

We express our profound gratitude to the brave bystanders who intervened at the scene and the emergency first responders and medical staff providing her with critical care.

The Australian Democrats stand in full solidarity with Helen Haines, her loved ones, and all parliamentary colleagues in demanding an end to violence and division in our public life.

Word’s spreading fast! 💚💛

It’s great to see the Australian Democrats sparking conversation again.

Here’s what House of Heksdatter had to say. 👇

A verrrry interesting development in Victorian politics has happened overnight… 👀

The Australian Democrats have officially regained their registration in Victoria after 20 years, just weeks out from the state election.

And honestly, the timing is intriguing.

We’ve already got a fascinating political landscape at the moment, now we’ve got another party entering the mix.

The Democrats have a fair bit of history in Australian politics, particularly in the Senate, where they were once quite influential in scrutinising legislation and negotiating with governments.

The word on the street is that they’re looking to bring a more positive approach to Victorian politics, which is interesting given how much of the current political conversation seems to revolve around pointing fingers and telling us who’s to blame, rather than what anyone actually intends to do about it 😅

Whether they manage to bring something different to the conversation remains to be seen, of course.
But I’m interested to see how this plays out.

Curious what everyone else makes of it?

They called it a comeback.
We call it a resurrection. 💚💛

The Australian Democrats are officially registered with the Victorian Electoral Commission and will contest the Victorian State Election this November — putting Democrats back on a Victorian state ballot for the first time in 20 years.

Twenty years is a long time in politics.

Governments have changed. Leaders have come and gone. Trust in our institutions has been tested. Politics has become louder, angrier and increasingly dominated by the idea that you have to pick a side and defend it at all costs.

But some things haven’t changed.

Australians still deserve representatives who think for themselves.

Who scrutinise legislation on its merits rather than simply voting along party lines.

Who believe compromise isn’t weakness.

Who understand that accountability matters regardless of who is in government.

And who are prepared, when necessary, to keep the bastards honest.

The Australian Democrats were never meant to be another team in the political shouting match. We were built to be independent, pragmatic and willing to work across the aisle when good ideas deserved support — and to push back when governments needed scrutiny.

That role hasn’t disappeared.

If anything, Australian politics needs it more than ever.

So after twenty years away from Victorian state ballots, the Democrats are returning.

We’re back, Victoria and we have unfinished business! 💚💛

Celebrating two legends of the Australian Democrats

We are delighted to announce that John and Joanne Nairn have been awarded Life Membership of the Australian Democrats, recognising their extraordinary contribution and decades of dedicated service to the party.

John and Joanne’s involvement in Australian politics stretches back more than half a century. They joined the Australia Party in 1972, with John serving as a campaign manager at that year’s federal election.

When the Australia Party merged with Don Chipp’s New Liberal Movement in 1977, the Australian Democrats were born — and John and Joanne became part of a political movement they would support for decades to come.

Over the years they have contributed enormously through election campaigns, party administration and management, and numerous other roles. John’s service alone has included roles as Campaign Manager, Information Officer, Identity Officer, Returning Officer for executive ballots and keeper of the party’s state archives.

Most remarkably, their contribution continues today. More than 50 years after they first became politically active, John and Joanne remain passionate and committed members of the Australian Democrats.

Their story is a wonderful reminder that our party is built on generations of people willing to give their time, energy and experience because they believe in our democracy and in the important role the Australian Democrats can play in strengthening it.

As a new generation of Democrats builds on that legacy, we are enormously fortunate to have people like John and Joanne still alongside us.

Please join us in congratulating John and Joanne Nairn — Life Members of the Australian Democrats.
