Air Raid Shelters in Mosman, a small exhibition on view until 23 October 2026

"When my husband was called up in 1942, he thought he’d better build an air raid shelter for me and children, so we got a construction person to build this air raid shelter in the backyard, which was supposed to withstand a 1,500pd bomb if it fell on it. It was a beehive shaped thing; and it had a tiny door that you went in through and no windows. It had a concrete floor, and the whole thing was supposed to be totally bomb resistant."

This catalogue was donated by Ken Hillier, who attended the inaugural Killarney School art exhibition 53 years ago on 4, 5 and 6 October 1973. Ken arrived in Sydney in 1963 aboard the comet and went on to have a successful career in marketing including being responsible for introducing Moccona coffee to Australia, when working for Marrickville Holdings.

The catalogue is an amazing record of Australian artists who were just beginning their careers and whose work is now highly collectable.
